Pixel 5 gets mediocre 120 points in DxOMark test

30 October 2020
It's using very old hardware and Google's decision not to include a third camera limits it even further.

Dxomark have separated the main camera score now from the other lenses and it's not too far behind the leaders for the main camera score. The zoom and ultrawide are a now separate category and the combined score for those is obviously a good bit behind

It got a similar score to the Note 20 ultra with no telephoto camera to pad zoom stats and no flagship isp module. That's actually really impressive, not mediocre lol

considering the fact that pixel has the oldest camera module, this score is still a fantastic one 👏👏

Only dual lens, score 120. 👏

How comes? if it's all about software then why the hell cameras use Zeiss lens, larger Sensors, OIS, PDAF, Laser Focus, WHY??? A sensor 50% is liable for image quality, and the rest 50% is for ISP, Lens, etc.

129 on Photos and 107 on videos, not mediocre but quite good, you should not expect too much on Zoom since there is no telephoto lens. please don't do injustice.

The very purpose of such measurements is to separate the good from the better and the best.

Although yes, your argument is right for users like me. With a DSLR for my journeys, I keep expectations from mobile fairly medium.

haha mediocre camera, no point in buying this phone anymore, only the cameras were the usp about pixel phones, but now even that is average, nothing in the phone justifies it's price tag anymore

It's obvious that the Pixel 5 is not at the level of current flagship cameras and it's not trying to be. But remember when not very long ago scoring higher than 100 on DxOMark was considered mind boggling good? Calling a score of 120 "mediocre" is stupid. This is still an exceedingly good camera. I doubt there are many consumers that care about the difference from the very top phones or about all the different lenses they're missing out on.

It does not matter what phone DXOMark ranks as the new "number 1". In a few months, there's going to be another phone manufacturer that DXOMark has collaborated with so it will be the new number 1. Like a teacher giving exclusive test materials only to specific students under his/her tutorial programs. Materials that are sure to come out in the final exams while the rest of the students who don't avail of thr expensive tutorial services grapple with what's going to come out in the final exams/tests. And those students can't complain because the exams also contain ESSAY type tests where the weighting and scoring methods are 100% confidential and unverifiable. That's DXOMark! It probably pays Gsmarena for article space so it can revive its sagging, deteriorating reputation as a reliable, truly unbiased phone camera rating site.

Still waiting for you to cook up your own "battery test" and "camera test" because apparently any independent body that doesn't give good score to iPhones are unreliable to you

someone123, 31 Oct 2020I'm not sure if Pixel 2 was equal in price with the iP... moreThe pixel 2 XL was $849 when released.
The iPhone X was $999. The iPhone 8 plus (yes we can't forget about it) was $799 because the Pixel was competing against the 8Plus primarily not the X. Apple created that "category" to push the price to 1000 and above...
Galaxy S8+ was $850 like the Pixel 2 XL.
This for me was all flagship prices. 800...900...1000...there's little difference. They were competing with each other.

Pixel 3XL quite affordable? It was released with a price tag of $899 64Gb. The most crazy they came out...

Only in Pixel 4XL google maintained the $899 price of the previous model at launch.

Pixel 5 is $700 and for a midrange is quite expensive. Yes i know you get the clean software and a good camera (but it's not a benchmark anymore it seems) but it lacks in other departments for that price like fingerprint in the rear (really??) and the SoC in 2-3 years will it hold down heavy games with high definition without lag? Bluetooth 5.0? Still UFS 2.1...no wifi 6? (oneplus 8T has it...) fast charging only 18W when all midranges are going 33W, 50W, 65W some...i mean they still give you features but seems like they're giving you the watered down features. They are always behind, funny enough Apple is also always behind these days. Long gone are the Steve days when they were in the front.

P3 was also quite affordable, though limited in hardware as you say.
P5 is midrange but definitely not "almost flagship prices". If you just think of pocketable phones, the iPhone 12 is the only one that can compete and S20 comes far behind (in camera quality). The S20 has almost the same price but is not a flagship (the ultra is, it's double the price) and the iPhone is almost double the price.
But I agree, the P5 currently a bad deal, especially if you already own an earlier model.

I have all reasons to jump ship back to Samsung, the camera is the only thing holding me back to the pixel. Plus the crazy prices right now.
