Pixel 5 gets mediocre 120 points in DxOMark test

30 October 2020
It's using very old hardware and Google's decision not to include a third camera limits it even further.

"mediocre 120 points" LOL I remember when Pixel got like 80 points and it was groundbreaking! Google literary popularized DxOMark for smartphones!

DxOMark easily disregards the features that aren't present on their favourite (the one that fetches them most cash) device and then gives points on things they prefer. It's like that school teacher who puts the same questions in exam that she gave as practice in her private tuitions so that her extra paying students get higher scores. You can't give fake test results, but you can design the tests in a way they benefit certain brands.

This article is a bit misleading.
120 is by no means a low score. If you leave out all the Chinese phones from the rankings, The Pixel 5 is only 1 point lower than the Note20Ultra, 4 points lower than the iPhone11ProMax and 6 points lower than the S20Ultra.
Notable phones that have a lower score than the Pixel5 are the OnePlus8Pro, S20+, Pixel4 and iPhone11.
And an important point to note is that the Pixel5 uses the same hardware as the Pixel3 that scored 102. So all the improvement is purely software, which is truly amazing.

I came over from the Samsung S20 Ultra and I prefer the photos taken on the Pixel 5 by a large margin. Except for the zoom I don't miss the S20 ultra at all.

DXO Mark is highly skewed towards more cameras. The quality of the cameras on the Pixel 5 are stellar and if you don't have a need for other lenses then who cares if it's 120 or something higher. Personally I prefer a telephoto and the ultrawide is useless af to me, but reviewers have skewed things the other direction.

honestly... the dxomark team does the stupidest tests :))). "Excellent detail", "crop. no noise" :)))). They actually picked the worse part of the Pixel made photo and compared it with the best part of the picture taken with another phone :))). LOL. Only a dumbass will take their conclusion for granted

It is behind all 2020 Android flagships, also behind pixel 5 with weak Snapdragon 765 ISP.

Photos taken wide or video are not mediocre, but the lack of telephoto, zoom lens, macro lens etc. is taken into an account when it comes to final score.
So even as Pixel 5 owner, I have to agree with the score, BUT only a dumbass is reading score and not the whole review.

Honestly who trusts DxOmark. They give marks depending on how much they got paid

Boom! DxOmark is immediately shown to be unreliable.

Do they know that camera hardware is only part of the story?

The software is so good that there's no more need for hardware.

                                  Kind of like iPhones.

Dxomark scores are the most practical basis to judge photo quality. Their top 10 list consist of all chinese phones like ximi and hawai. OK.

120 isn't a bad score considering the variety of lenses it lacks.
But we all know how credible DxOMark is especially when they put Mate 40 pro above the Zenfone 7 pro in best selfie shooter.

I don't understand what google is trying to do with the Pixel line....really
They started with Pixel 1, Pixel 2... wanted it to go head to head with the iPhone (price inclusive). Then they started to put sub par components and features missing in the Pixel 3, Pixel 4 but price still high. Availability is very bad, only in the US you can buy them easily.
Now with the 5 they put a mid range SoC, old camera hardware and ask almost flagship prices. Oh well they should focus on software and let phones once and for all. They don't know what they want.
