If you want to live in a world of fear where everything will break and kill you that's your problem, but don't need to negatively affect the tech itself, there is literally several peoples writing about comments like your that will come, and without any positive feeling toward seeing it.

Anonymous, 06 Nov 2020xiaomi does not have it, so no differencePlease, don't mix up water resistance and IP certification, not only many IP rated phones still die in water, but many non IP rated phones are quite well build with good water resistance, like OnePlus did with the OnePlus 6 and 7 who have an excellent survival capability with accidental immersion, even the OnePlus 7(t) Pro with its pop up.
And talking about pop up, even the Mi-9t Pro and Poco F2 Pro who have a pop up still offer a reasonable water resistance level, in fact the Poco F2 Pro is even rated IP53, probably both to shut up the pop up haters who bring water resistance on the table or even to troll them as almost none of their phones do have IP rating.

I think the headline is misleading. As far as I know Xiaomi's post didn't mention "smooth zoom". It could still be a tele prime lens as prime lenses have better quality than zoom lenses. The Panasonic Cm1 had a similar design, but it was a wide angle prime lens.

About time someone came up with a phone that has a RETRACTABLE zoom lens.
The Galaxy ZOOM back in the day was close, but didn't have a phone. Skip all the
multicamera lens garbage, install a good quality retractable zoom lens, for OPTICAL
zoom and be done with it.

I have been reading this post, and have to add something to be included in this discussion:
If you noticed january 4. 2020 Xiaomi released a smartwatch for kids, named Mitu 4pro. In this watch they implemented the tunable lens, Tlens, from poLight. This was the first commersial product in the world using this technology. It is NOT a liquid lens, but a polymer lens with extremely small x-y-zise, 1ms focustime, ultra low powerconsumption, no interference, etc.
Tlens is included in 2 disruptive projects just now: AF small-nose selfiecam and big aperture maincam. The module OEMs are not known, but probably Ofilm and LG Innotek. These OEMs have patented 10-15 different modules including Tlens.
I have been waiting for news about the Tlens to be included in more Xiaomi-products, and there are some Xiaomipatents pointing towards disruptive technology in this kind of camera.
Do you think this foldable camera can be built on an autofocusing lens?

I never heard of any issues caused by dust in any compact camera who usually have the same system, I don't say it doesn't happen, it just is apparently quite rare.
For the rest, just read the answer I gave to "djst" and stop with pessimistic assumptions written as facts.

Those pocket cameras that use 3x - 10x optical zoom have 1/2.3" sensor usually paired with f3.6-5.6 lenses.

Before coming back here to say approximately the same thing, I was gonna joke about saying that I would launch a cruise missile in the direction of the person who said that.
There is NOT A SINGLE instance where moving part was an issue, you are only repeating something you read somewhere probably also repeated from something read from an article that evoked the possibility of having a chance to get maybe a potential failure because it is moving parts.
When in reality moving parts are probably and most often the most reliable component, MAINLY those who aren't continuously in motions, like pop up, optical zoom, vibration motor and other occasionally used mechanisms, and even there, there are watch who are still in working conditions or even working after CENTURIES.
The ONLY time companies say stuff like that about moving parts is actually when they market a product that do the same thing without any, exactly as if "it was a commercial argument", and often despite themselves making mechanical versions that work fine.
So if anything, this isn't "moving parts" we need less of, this is peoples saying totally wrong things about moving parts that we should reduce to a more manageable number, as many useful, loved, practical and better solutions are lost because of the fear and fantaisies about imaginary issues those have, were never implemented or are disappearing because of that.
If you don't want it, fine, go buy one of the bazillion other available phone without it and leave this for those who want it, we don't need your negativity about something that many want.
