OnePlus not using a + Plus-shaped camera array with 4-5 different types of camera lenses is surely a missed opportunity.

Lasuto, 15 Nov 2020Just ignore him and pretend you never saw that long wall of... more"long wall of text".
Not even "long comment" or "wall of text" but directly "long wall of text" !
I bet you don't read much books...
And what if the one we ignored was actually you ?
Tell me again how you are so much better than me by writing stuffs like :
"I was wondering why the camera setup looks familiar. I just remembered. Appleseed 😂"
"Stupid branding. Less is much."
"Can't even typed it right smh"

AnonD-955101, 15 Nov 2020Usefulness and implementation design are two different thin... moreI know that, but the punch hole is still useless in both.
I am not afraid of anything, this is a fact that many apps and websites DO collect data from multiple things on your device, including your camera.
It have been proven a while ago in multiple ways, the most popular was from the pop up camera that would in some apps and websites open, clearview AI should have been a clear warning already that your face is already being used against your will, and that is only through what you knowingly and willingly upload to internet.
Just think all places you use your phone and ask yourself, would you install a camera there and livestream it you get in the room ?
Because that's close to what you are already doing, the issue is that, privacy isn't about being filmed naked or stuff like that, it can be a life ruining thing that can take your liberty away.
A punch hole is as useless as an iPhone X/11/12 notch with only a single FFC would be, it is useless because it cause a big disturbance on the display that can't be justify by the camera alone.
The notch can be useful, if properly implemented relative to how many features goes along its size.
A bezel can be useless too, the Meizu 16 is a great exemple, they have absolutely nothing else than a camera on that, why taking more expensive and worse performing proximity and ambiant light sensors when you have the space to implement them as it have always been done ? And why the tiny speaker when you have so much space available ?
That's literally a bad habit caused by the punch hole trend, because of how invasive it is.
As much as I love pop up, I also consider pop up module with a single camera and nothing else to be a big waste of space and opportunity although I'd take that anyday over a punch hole or a notch, considering that adding additional sensors won't increase the motor footprint, it literally mean that the most you take out of your pop up, the more it justify its presence and the least space is wasted.
From the huge iPhone X notch, to the first Android to include a notch (other than the Essential PH1) had a quite large one with only few sensors, the Zenfone 5 is a great exemple and the first of a well known brand.
(The first after the iPhone X was the iLA X, which is basically a budget copy of it, followed by the Oukitel U18 and U19 based on Kimovil).
Then it became progressively smaller until it reached the teardrop shape and size, and except on the Huawei Mate 30 the large notch was basically dead on Android very quickly as it was obvious that it took too much space.
Then, since only a single hole in the middle of that notch was left, they simply removed the notch as it had no purpose anymore, and the punch hole is basically born as a need to stop interrupting the display while not doing it, because it give less the impression that it is a removed part of the display than the notch for the same camera hole size.
Then all manufacturers are shrinking their front camera more and more, they literally use smaller hole as marketing argument, because all this hole ask to, is to just disappear, but smaller hole mean less quality, hence why the Asus Zenfone 7 and 7 Pro, who haven't THE best or latest main camera, still beat easily most phone in front facing camera contest except the Huawei Mate 40 Pro(+) and P40 Pro(+), because that's how much of a difference there is between the best but tiny front camera in the punch hole, and a regular, untouched main camera.
Even the Zenfone 6 with his IMX586 is on the top 10 of best front camera quality.
And that doesn't even take into account software quality, the raw camera is what make the difference here.
Clearly the punch hole is doing more harm than good.
And if it wasn't that much invasive, I wouldn't care about it, but it is everywhere, there is barely anything else, this a big issue.

Anonymous, 15 Nov 2020Again with the high res ToF crap?
It does not exist becau... moreCaNcEr ThReAtMeNt DoEsN't ExIsT bEcAuSe iT hAvE nO uSe.
That's how valid your argument is, there are TONS of things that don't exist despite being quite useful, a simple exemple : A Microwave mute button, it is the simplest thing to implement with a button and a LED, yet it doesn't exist despite many peoples that would love it.
How many times I have to tell you that current ToF and LiDAR are based on INDUSTRIAL USES for MAPPING 3D STRUCTURES where DISTANCE PRECISION MATTER MORE THAN DEPTH RESOLUTION.
They are NOT for PHOTOGRAPHY USES, in which case RESOLUTION IS MORE IMPORTANT.
Case A : Tell how far a car is (Car LiDAR), tell how far this wall is (LiDAR 3D Scanner), what is the geometry of this object (3D objects scanners).
Case B : Try to get informations about which TINY parts of the picture, that can be a single pixel wide, like hairs commonly are, is in foreground or in background, without relying on power hungry computational AI that have to figure out (and can't get it 100% right all the time) what is hair, what is plant, what is wall etc, from a crappy low resolution to apply it to a high resolution.
How is that hard to understand ? Current ToF/LiDAR are just a temporary solution that got borrowed by the smartphone industry from a totally different type of industry, because it can do an acceptable job compared to none and the name sound good which attract peoples who don't know better.
This is exactly like trying to cool yourself using an aquarium pump, yes, it does blow air, and if you don't know better you'd think it is more than enough, because you don't know how much better a fan or aircon is.
In this case a better analogy would be if you drove around your car by using the starter motor and consider and there is no need for electric cars as it already use your battery and more your car around, that's how effective and limited an industrial ToF/LiDAR is for photography.
Computational photography doesn't give a flying damn that you have a sub-mm distance accuracy, what it need is to have enough data to match the 12Mp final output to make proper post focus, lightning and retouching computation.
I challenge you to do a 12Mp photography manual retouching on a monitor set to 480p resolution without zooming in the picture, go ahead, see how well you can manually do layers, then comeback and say it is useless.

Oh my.. my in-display camera dream for op9...
Honestly who in their right minds would wish for a 144Hz display, no visual / pragmatic improvement at the cost of material and battery. Quit the stupid marketing strategy and let the product speaks for itself.
If any Oneplus employee is reading this, please consider this for op9 :
1) LTPO 120Hz Display
2) Graphene Battery
3) Promising at least 3 major updates
4) In-display camera

People are talking about less cameras, when the 8 had only 3 including a macro
Look at the cameras and you'll see it's the same
That 3rd camera is a macro or depth

I would suggest that the 1+9 series to make the phone little bit compact because after I phone 12 mini showed up everyone are so excited to buy it but the fact it's very expensive they do not buy it so there's a chance of better marketting if the phone is handy and compact my pov
