Report: Apple working on up to 32-core CPUs, 8 or 12-core chip in 2021

07 December 2020
Apple's transition to its own chips targeting MacBook Pro in 2021, Mac Pro in 2022.

12-core with 32gb of RAM would be pretty sick. I do wonder how much of a difference this will make for people who don't care about productivity. Mac users interested in productivity will definitely benefit, but will there be any spill over effect? I can honestly say these are the first Apple products I have been genuinely interested in since the iPod.

Neither is a silver bullet and just looking it from hardware perspective is pointless. Why else do you think all other attempts failed so far, but when Apple with its fully rounded ecosystem stepped in, it miraculously works? Believe me, it's not by chance. And no, ARM won't replace anything. At best it'll coexist in parallel with x86 which is not going anywhere...

Anonymous, 07 Dec 2020Developers will one day release games for ARM for Windows. ... moreYou know that runs at 720p right? "Making" games for ARM doesn't mean specific native support. It's more like a translation from x86 / 64bit and such to work on ARM. Games are being developed on PC, then optimized on consoles. This will not change the PC market at all, and it doesn't have to.

Annas, 07 Dec 2020There are a lot of companies that build arm...or tried arm ... moreSorry, what are you talking about. I'm not comparing to Arm back then, I'm saying it could have been done then, this is just late. The Intel chip guy, who cares. Intel x86 are like the T-Rex when you wanted a nice iprny top Ferrari sports car. Have you ever tried to put a T-Rex into a Ferrari? The Arm in inbetween. The chip guy I know, is world leader in low energy processing, and does a T-Rex on Intel efforts into low energy. Maybe Apple should have gotten the NVIDIA guys, who outdudy them years back. My guy did a 144 core CPU with around 600mhz a core on 180nm that is rated around 6mw full speed. We are moving towards 2nm, so imagine what might be done one day. Also, this is a little bit of hidden information. Memory chip fabrication is cheaper and processing circuitry using it is one of the best performance ratios years ago. But, that type of manufacturing process has too little layers to implement a conventional complex CPU, but these ultra low energy CPU's are also very simple and a much better target for such manufacturing processes. You might think that manufacturers surely would do the best thing, but they are often interested in promoting their product more, and trying to figure out how to push that wheel burrough faster. Big, big, change is risky and expensive. Look at Apple, it took them decades to get to do this, even though they even manufacture their own CPUs that have desktop performance, before they decide to actually change their desktop processors.

Annas, 07 Dec 2020Since in 10 years all AAA games will be build for arm arhit... moreThat's not how any of this works. ARM operates completely different than x86 and so on. They are by far the most popular and had had developments for centuries. Developers won't just natively design games for ARM. They might enable compatability by letting the ARM chip "translate" into it's own language.

AnonD-804996, 07 Dec 2020It won't actually. If you're a gamer, Mac is out ... moreWhy not? Intel has been slacking off since Sandy Bridge and each generation had far less improvements than pre-Sandy Bridge. AMD only managed to catch up when they released Ryzen and that forced Intel to get off from its comfort zone. ARM and Apple are actually leading the CPU competition only to be held back by software. Their perf per watt is unmatched. As for gaming, the integrated M1 GPU being as powerful as GTX 1050 or the likes is certainly an impressive feat. Unfortunately, the game support in MacOS is lackluster but with the help of emulation and virtualisation, there is still hope for gaming on an M1 chip.

It is expected that Macbook ARM will max out at 8+4, that's the power limit. With 8 Firestorm cores, it will run through very demanding tasks with ease. Scaling it to workstations, it could be Apple's best effort in hardware engineering. This is certainly the most exciting tech Apple has made in my opinion which is why I have very high expectations.

But the "chip guy" that made Intel great in the past is now on Apple side for almost 7-8 years
No one else knows silicon like that man....that its impressive
You cant compare Acorn Computers with what arm is now...
Its like comparing the first tablet with an ipad tablet
Its like comparing the first smartphone with the iphone/galaxy and so on smartphones we have today
Its night and day...if Arm was important since 80s and they had the "chip guy" that would not be left on hold and it would have been took of
Tech limits of the 80s and 90s
What apple is doing, making the linar performance/w, so think what is the begining , the M1...that draws 20-22W ...and now think what perf can do when the next cpu will be inside into an 90W or 120W or even 200W.....and after you do that math...the result compare it with the PC world...
In UK all the servers are going arm until 2030...less heat, less cooling, less energy needed....so saving mil of pounds per month just by going arm
So this is impressive....but hey, a guy who hates the company that made this start,he doesnt care or lie that is impressive...Apple could make anything you wanted, but since its from Apple, you lie that you dont care...in words...because with your money you buy Apple

History of Arm and Apple. Acorn computers developed the ARM CPU with the 6502 processor designer. Both were leading processors in the consumer market. Acorn developed the Electron computer, very compact. I think they took integrated ideas from there over to the ARM chipset used in their first purely ARM computer, the Acorn Archimedes. At that stage the Archimedes was the fastest personal computer there was, with a great graphical user interface OS (RISC OS) when that was latter released. But from the beginning, was talk it would take on the PC in the business space, but didn't, even though it could have P on it's grave. The PC hobbled ahead. Later, the Digital Equioment Corporation made Strong Arm chip, and again the Arm was the most powerful, but it didn't happen. Apple and Motorola, and other partners in the Power PC development, tried to develop an alternative to the Intel processor neglecting ARM. Apple absurdly, to as using ARM, even producing a PDA based on a powerful Arm, instead, they made the wrong choice and went Power PC. King Jobs had returned, and decided to kill the now mature powerful ARM based PDA, and the small long battery life arm based laptop they already had (yes, so unreal).

The truth is, we expected Apple to go Arm in the mid 1990's, 2000's, 2010's where others had more than 32 core CPU. They should be able to do hundreds of cores by now. I suggested to NVIDIA a 1KW workstation using hundreds of CPUs, based on their old existing chipset technology, and 10KW, towers, along with a 200W conventional home computer.

Is it anything special, not really, something delayed.

Some if this just simple was manufactures not designing desktop OS level features into the chip, but there were server chips out there for a while.

The ARM CPU used by Apple, would be 10-100+X less performance than what could be done using alternative design, where a mw could yield more than a GHz. Imagine radically different phones where the battery can be super thin or small. The efficiency and reliance of the systems on custom application circuitry (video codec etc etc) and GPU is one of the things which hides how weak the CPU portion is.

In my own design musing, I'm trying. To hit a design that approaches the power efficiency of an unoptimised custom chip. Rewriting the rule book. So, what are we getting excited about?

Again the M1 has the same perf as an amd radeon 570 , and M1 ONLY gpu draws at peak 10W !
So, think about what an igpu can do with an 60W draw power or with an custom Gpu that draws 90W-120W....think linear since this is how it works now for Apple
So an gpu that draws 60W it will be around 5-6 times faster than the M1 gpu

Then the power efficiency and thermal dissipation limits a scalar replication. Even so, the present software makes no use of so many cores excepting the computer runs some scientific applications about the inequity, diversity and integration. The Artificial Intelligence with Siri does not need more than 8 cores as well as an ant does not need a human brain to do its daily chores.
