Shanti Dope, 18 Dec 2020Won't be possible for as long as Apple holds their own... moreWhat?

Everybody can license the instruction set architecture and make big cores like Apple.
It's the money and expertise that haven't allowed them to do it. Except for Samsung, they just give up after 3 failed attempts.

funny that the a14 scores better in cpu performance and gpu performance when its a 6 core processes and the 888 is a 8 core.

That shows how bad the 888 is. when apple goes to 8 core, it will seriously be game over :)

Cmon qualcomm, maybe in 2023 things will look better.

Wily2020, 18 Dec 2020” Androids typically score higher on AnTuTu due to better o... moreNot to mention that antutu is owned by the chinese. That's why you can see so many discrepancies between Samsung, LG and Sony vs any other chinese company that always scores higher even with the same spec configuration.

It's a shitshow of benchmark that nobody should take it seriously.

Wily2020, 18 Dec 2020” Androids typically score higher on AnTuTu due to better o... moreI think you should pay more attention to the fact that going from SD 865 to SD 888, the FPS went from 54 FPS to 86 FPS in one generation, 32 FPS gain.

If the Apple A15 gains only 10 FPS next year again and the SD 888's successor gains 32 FPS again, it's going to be 112 FPS for the A15 vs 118 FPS for the next SD.

Apple better work hard on their next mobile GPU :)

Anonymous, 18 Dec 2020Lame excuse. A14 is 2020 chip. Like 865 and 865+. ... morethe 888 is the cuccurent of the A14 just the calendar which is different (the proof is the engraving process). The A14 makes the majority of its Life cycle in 2021 (9 months) you have to stop the bullshit, you are not going to compare the A15 which will be released 10 months after the 888 is almost 1 year ... If Qualcomm was also a manufacturer and did not have to keep specifications for twenty brands, the ploughshare would come out at the same time as the iPhone. moreover xiaomi announces its smartphone in december with the 888

Shanti Dope, 18 Dec 2020Won't be possible for as long as Apple holds their own... morehow can they hold a license for such an aspect/for core sizes?!

Anonymous, 18 Dec 2020Lame excuse. A14 is 2020 chip. Like 865 and 865+. ... moreA14 and SD 888 are both Apple's and Qualcomm first 5nm mobile SoC, I don't see why we should care about what year they're going to be used when it's still 2020 and SD 888 benchmark have been leaking for months, they just have slightly different release cycle...

SD 865 was announced in December 2019, is on 7nm+ node and uses Cortex-A77 cores that were announced in May 2019...

When you understand that you'll see that for tech a few months is a lot of time. You can compare your iphones at best with the Mate 40 pro+, they seem to have a similar launch schedule, even comparing then to the Note series is the same as comparing a newborn to a 2-3 month old child.

Android score better because antutu iOS and Android scores aren’t comparable, they measure different things. It’s been said even in Antutu official site that you shouldn’t compare them together. That’s why Apple beats Androids in all other benchmarks by big margin and losing in Antutu.

Apple chip easily beats even this new chip in GPU https://images.macrumors.com/t/siDtoOdtAfUbRWllpTdU6F1MsKw=/1600x0/filters:quality(90)/article-new/2020/12/qualcomm-snapdragon-benchmark-2.png can’t really even beat last year iPhone.

Shanti Dope, 18 Dec 2020You have to do more research again. The Cortex A7x series ... moreYes yes, i know all that. I asked you what license is it that prevents qualcomm from making custom cores as 'big' as apple does. They have made full custom kryo cores in sd820, what prevents them from making one again?

SashaV, 18 Dec 2020I'm not an expert so I'm asking what is differenc... moreAnTuTu tests every single chipset-related performance tasks of a smartphone, while GeekBench focuses mostly on CPU only, but even more detailed than AnTuTu at that.

Androids typically score higher on AnTuTu due to better optimized UI sometimes, or maybe more and faster memory, perhaps better graphics too. iPhones score higher on GeekBench mainly because their CPU cores are seriously the most powerful that you can get out of any mainstream smartphones today, as theirs are literally twice as big as what other Android chipmakers are using.
The reason why they're bigger and Android chipmakers can't make CPU cores as big as Apple's would be down to the history of Qualcomm's one mistake that led them to their long-term defeat to Apple.
Back in 2013, Apple started making the first 64-bit smartphone processor, the Apple A7 chip. At that time, Qualcomm underestimated Apple's bold move, saying that it was unnecessary and we won't need 64-bit in the future.
That was the biggest mistake they have ever commited, as Apple was able to file a patent that gives them the privilege to be the only chipmaker to design an ARM-based CPU architechture with cores that are as big as what they are using today, which left Qualcomm and others with no choice but to design CPU cores that's half the size of Apple's, instead of having to pay so much license fees for every individual unit produced with CPU cores as big as Apple's.

[deleted post]But iexcuseme, you can't compare 2020 to 2021 chips even though it's like 1,2 months apart :))). There will flood of nonsense defending until a15 not to far away in Nov, 21 haha

Mediatek sux, 18 Dec 2020What license? Cant they make custom cores like the kryo in ... moreYou have to do more research again.
The Cortex A7x series cores that Qualcomm uses (modified in the name of Kryo Gold series) are literally half the size of Apple's corresponding high performance cores.
And no, the Cortex X1 is not a custom core either. It's exactly a super core designed by ARM and Qualcomm just included in their new SD888. Apple's custom cores are seriously larger than ARM's designs.
This is the main reason why iPhones always tend to have smaller batteries, because their efficiency is excellent due to their ability to consume less power to achieve a similar performance to most Android flagships, but this is not the same case for the A14 Bionic, as the chipset is deemed too power hungry to prevent thermal throttling.
In any case, there's really no need of that much power on smartphones today if we were to factor in how many apps and games can actually utilize their maximum power.
I could only think of GenShin Impact, and that can already be perfectly handled by a SD865 at maximum graphics, so the SD888 would be perfectly usable in literally all tasks that you will throw into a smartphone.
What Android phones need to work on is to get apps to be well-optimized for their hardware, because that's what gives iOS the advantage in terms of performance. This may be too difficult enough though, since Android OS is a very big platform that can be found across all budget levels, and developers won't have enough time working their apps to every single one of them, unlike on iOS where you only have a few of them.
