27 December 2020
The Asus Zenfone Zoom had only one camera module on its back and yet it could cover the 28-84 mm range with optical zoom, no digital processing.

"it's impossible to have a single do-it-all camera and compete in quality."

They just lost cheaper compacts for average consumers to smartphones and they could have a great future with phones. It would be a real game changer for both industries. Now it seems that at least Leica and Zeiss have more and more partnerships with smartphone industry. But there would be so much more room for Fujifilm, Ricoh, Nikon and all the others.

An ex-gf of mine had the Asus Zoom... awful smartphone, full of bugs, intel processor had many compatibility issues.... and the camera itself was just "meh"

Hmm, wait... I thought that Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom / Zenfone Zoom S act as the spiritual successor to the Asus Zenfone Zoom (ZX550/551ML)?

28mm to 90mm optical zoom is my preference. Ultrawide only popularized by GoPro & smartphones.

I really really hope camera company like Ricoh, Kodak (renew), Leica, Fujifilm open up to smartphone world, they have the brand name already. The high end specs only on the camera part, the rest of it can just be a mid ranger specs, with IP68, to justify the price.

The first zoom feature popular phone goes to Nokia 808, and then S4 zoom. But the writer missed to mention Samsung K zoom (S5 zoom) which was the true zoom phone in many ways. Large aperture, 10x variable zoom capability, good design and ofcourse a Samsung product. But the truth is there was no demand at that time and PPL were getting crazy for slim phones so all these camera zoom centric phones would be just in Hall of Fame wall and nothing more.

Notch is fine, if justified by tech advancements placed in there.
8 Camera censors would scare the hell out of me. It would be like an evil spider looking around :D

The world of smartphone could have have gone single before it was multiple if we had hear ASUS.🤔🤨🧐

What I visioned about the modern periscope zoom camera is a 1-inch or 2/3" sensor with 5x zooming and an aperture between f/1.4 to f/4.0. We can have a thick camera sensor that resulted in a large camera bump a la Nokia 808 PureView and Nokia Lumia 1020, but I'm not sure if people want that today.

Periscope lens aren't a new thing, though.

Digital camera Minolta DiMAGE X were using dual camera. One is a wide main cam, while its secondary cam is a periscope tele lens, capable of 3x optical zoom. That was back in 2002.

Whackcar, 27 Dec 2020ASUS is one of the most underrated tech companies out there... moreI agree. They have a lot of product with decent pricing. Currently using Zenfone 5 for almost 2 years and 2x using their laptops. A mid-range laptop from Asus was with me for 5 years. Now used by my sister, make it 6 years now. Still up and running!

Now I'm using Zenbook 3 Deluxe. Can't say anything but it is a beautiful ultrabook with amazing performance. However, there are quite many issues found in this ultrabook and make me feel worried for having this in the long run.

That's it, their problem is on the quality control. They made great product but somehow, more than little their product are having a defect in some departments. It's either decent product or unlucky product.
