I'm stoked how this budget 5G chip will boost sales in the entry-level segment; the specs are quite promising. Phonemakers like Nokia may have an edge with this chipset since they mostly cater to the entry-level and midrange markets.

Anonymous, 05 Jan 2021SD 720G can go up to 2.3GHz, SD 480 can go up to 2.0 GHzA small difference to make sure that the upper tier SoC is still the better one, but we're talking about the exact same Qualcomm-customized Cortex A76 here. It would still run blazingly fast even if it's just at 1.5Ghz, so a mere 0.3Ghz wouldn't make enough of a difference in reality, and definitely not enough to say that it will be slow.
Better yet, the lower clockspeed would further improve efficiency, since both are based on the same 8nm fabrication as well.
A slight performance decrease for greater efficiency and having integrated 5G modem? Oh heck yes!

I know it's never going to happen. But it would be great if Xiaomi resurrects the compact Redmi 3/4, Moto resurrects the original compact Moto G with this SoC. Have always used SD4xx phones. Kept one for three years. Another is on its fourth year and still running as my primary. And the older 4xx is a back-up. I am not a gamer. But both run smooth. The only reason I had to stop using my older phone was it ran out of the 16gb ROM it offered in its third year. Planned obsolescence right there for you.
I know a lot of you would disagree, but for the stuff we do on our phones, this chip is more than sufficient. Early days of space research had them sending rockets to space with less.

BrickBroke, 04 Jan 2021People are forgetting one thing: Brands need to have some p... moreMost of the sub-$150 phones from Xiaomi and Realme already carry a 1080p display, and sure enough their prices mean that there's not enough budget for better audio and camera, yet still they're beyond usable for most people.
The older SD4xx SoCs are surely not super strong, but this one with the A76 cores will surely be perfectly fast for such low prices. The Adreno 619 that's also found on Qualcomm's SD7xx series should also mean that handling FHD+ 120Hz panels on budget phones should be problem-free.

I'm willing to bet that u don't know, or even understand QC's track record, or QC's business strategy.
NO SD4xx can challenge CPU performance of (newer) SD6xx (SD670, 675, 690), let alone its GPU.
Do u know why QC is using the same 'naming' of GPU in SD6xx/7xx to SD4xx?
To 'create hallucination' that recently QC is 'very generous' for budget-oriented customer.
In reality?
SD450 have the same GPU 'name' as SD625, but its performance is at best HALF the later
SD560 have the same GPU 'name' as SD665, but its performance is at best HALF the later (and the current SD 6xx lineup has quite weak GPU since SD7xx introduced ; the last powerful SD6xx GPU is SD660).
In Qualcomm's business strategy,
SD8xx lineup have both 100% CPU & 100% GPU, while
SD7xx lineup have both 50% CPU & 50% GPU (valid up to SD765, dunno about the upcoming SD775),
SD6xx lineup have both 40% CPU & 30-40% GPU (valid since SD670 up to SD690)
How about SD4xx? You can guess,

Anonymous, 04 Jan 2021This is better than all sd 6xx chipsets except sd690LOL...
In CPU, GPU, ISP, SD6xx have better specs,
the 'only' advantage' is the internal 5G modem (which basically have LTE cat.4 specs, the bare minimum speed) and 'newer' Cortex architechture (A73 leaped to A76 instead of A75)
Nope, no one will buy this Soc-powered phone; SD7xx-powered are the way to go if u want affordable but high-performance phone, even SD690 cannot enticed OEM since QC 'butchered' SD6xx lineup since SD670 era (weaken the SD6xx GPU to make sure SD7xx have better value)

As long as it is still viable to build phones 150 bucks or under with this chip. This changes everything. This would finally make phones a commodity and good at any price point. Similar to what we are starting to see with the dimensities in the 150/250 range.
