Weekly poll: picking the perfect display (refresh rate, resolution, curved or flat)

10 January 2021
Which would you prefer - a 1080p+ display running at 120Hz or a 1440p+ one at 60Hz. Also, flat or curved?

Sort by:

Zero curves, 2K (or 4K) with minimum 90Hz refresh rate on a 6" 16:9 ratio display would be my sweet spot.

I'm looking forward to QHD @144Hz 10 bit display.

That rumor just means you'll be able to choose between 4K@60Hz or 1080p@120Hz.

YUKI93, 10 Jan 2021For PC monitor, I definitely don't mind high resolutio... moreneed or dont need both depends on what we do with your phone. if we play games, yeah, it matters. I have already disabled 120Hz on my phone and have never used it. I just dont need it. but for someone like me, who hardly play games on their phone, I am in for higher resolution. 1080p is fine for me but higher is better. so people would try to sell and prioritize what they need and wont understand about others.
I would prefer every phone with 60/90/120 Hz display so we the consumers can choose what select. and higher resolution at least 1440p so when we watch multimedia, we are covered.

But if I have a chance to save 50 dollars with 60hz vs 120Hz phone, I would save it.

60 Hz is just too slow and for me, that's not an option. 120 Hz is okay, but the higher the better. After using 144 Hz panel for years, 60 Hz is horrible to watch. No matter if it has variable refresh technology helping, it still will never feel smooth enough. Now that phones can have good battery life with 90/120/144 Hz panels, I simply won't consider the slower panels anymore. Or well, I rather charge the phone more often, just to get a faster panel - high refresh rate is that important to me. :)

AnonD-762416, 10 Jan 2021I see there are a lot of people selling the lie that refres... moreYes, Xbox or PS5 can support 120hz. But to actually do that require 3 things. A good enough display, and a high end HDMI cable 2.1 / 2.0, and the game that support 120hz.

Even a PC, to achieve 1080p 144hz gaming is easy. But if you push up to Super Ultra wide 1440p / 240hz range like the G9, the cables you will need would be crazy.. it has to be rated 2.1 HDMI or display port 1.4. And a good gpu.

Sometimes, is that investment of a monitor / gpu / good cable enough to play just a limited subset of games? Maybe for some. But for casual people or gamers.. I do not think so.

Anything higher than 60hz would be not required for streaming Media (Youtube / Netflix / Facebook etc etc). Games that operate at 120hz is minimum at best. Reading text does not even consider refresh rate. Thats why when it comes to gaming monitor on PC, most are 1080p 240hz / 120hz display, while productivity monitor comes in at 5k 8k display at 60hz.

Actually there are a few more specs that need to address as well.
                        1. The nits. How bright the screen can be.
                        2. Color accuracy / contrast ratio
                        3. Screen response time. (If this is high, you will see ghosting)
                        4. CPU / GPU / software / battery power to drive the display reliability at the max frame rate. (Which they explain in the post)

I see there are a lot of people selling the lie that refresh rate doesn't matter.
There's a reason PC gamer displays are now 360Hz , that even your new Xbox or Playstation supports 120Hz. It does massive amounts to interaction lag. Something you can't fix with any amount of lies and half truths that "cinema movies are only 24Hz!". You don't interact with the movie. And in fact, you see humongous amounts of stuttering on any 24, 25, 50 or 60 Hz movie, if things start to move around a bit.

I lost interest in high refresh rate when I discovered that 60hz is more than enough for movies. 2k/4k and 60hz all the way.

60hz is fine for iPhones but Androids need more to appear fluid.

Personally don’t think anything over 60 is needed for a phone, much less “should be the minimum”.

For PC monitor, I definitely don't mind high resolution and high refresh rate. At the very least, FHD/1080p 120Hz would do nicely for me. But for laptop and smartphone monitor, I deeply value battery life so I prefer to have a screen resolution change option like what LG had implemented on the V50 ThinQ 5G and also adaptive screen refresh rate. I only want to use 120Hz or more during mobile gaming as I can definitely a clear night-and-day difference when compared with 60Hz. 120Hz in everyday use is clearly a big NO-NO for me.

so... gsmarena still omits notches and holes...
i choose 4k display (at least for 6.5inch on a 21:9, at 5.5inch some people see it as an overkill - though i have z5 premium, not the phone with the highest ppi since xz premium got that, as of now)... a 60hz is fine with me (4k at 120hz, your eyes will be filled with lotsa info with that)... and flat, too... i think the note edge (i think this one started the trend) is just ok, though did not had one... i think it is okay cause the side has an intended purpose, i dont prefer looking at pictures or watching movies with some part on the "curve"... same story with notches and holes... if the phone forces other apps to avoid using the part that has notches and holes then i am ok with it too... i will just think of them as bezels... but not all apps avoids them... (bank apps, multimedia - unless the phone is at least 18:9 and the content is at most 16:9)
but since not all people wants what i prefer, it is good that we have choices... at least there are still phones that are flat, without notches and holes, and has high resolution... diversity is good for diversed people...
