Weekly poll results: The ideal display is a flat 120Hz panel of 1080p resolution

17 January 2021
On the flip side, high resolution curved displays are an unpopular option, especially if the refresh rate is just 60Hz.

120hz can reduce SOT as much as 20%.

pan dv, 18 Jan 2021some people will always argue that something is overkill or... moreSaying 1080p LED is comparable to 720p LCD literally tells me you don't understand ANY of it (LCD's are LED's, but aren't really coz their pixels aren't individual LEDs, just backlight, you need to be more specific when you're claiming such things). Also human eye have pixel perception at around 350ppi. At anything beyond that you're literally pixel hunting or staring at it from 5cm distance. What's the point in doubling that when maybe only 1% of users will even perceive the difference, yet you're putting massive computational burden on GPU as well as display consuming more power because it has to switch more pixels. Have 80.000.000 ppi for all I care, I'm just saying it's straight up pointless and literally just to brag on specs sheets and nothing else. PPI defines pixel density which is irrelevant to the display size because you're already including that information within the density. And it just scales to pretty much any size and PPI doesn't increase with display size as that's irrelevant factor.

Kangal, 18 Jan 2021Here is my personal preference would be: DFiQTY D - Arou... more1440p pentile is equal to 1080p RGB. OLED is actually very old teach which already reached its peak. Its not sharp nor it ever whose, that's the reason for pentile in the first place. To reach higher refresh back panel switching tranzistors must be IZGO. All do black is black and obviously they almost don't spend any power (back panel is still active) reproducing it it speed's much more reproducing whites up to 3x more than good IGZO LCD and on static one's 5x more. In real use case's that's more important. All do OLED has a "perfect black" it's rather hard to make one with good gray calibration which again is very important for real contrast and details you will get. There are so sharp LCD panels that you won't ever cross 50% line. In the end while OLEDS are reaching EOL the LCD have a long way ahead of it including micro LED's and cetera.
6" 16:9 FHD good IGZO LCD at 60 Hz and back panel switching at 2x the speed and HLG10+ that reaches 1200 nits brightness and 800 when rigorously calibrated (2.2 to 2.4 gama or REC1886 even better) is probably the best you could hope for right now (all do you won't get one)

uknowme, 18 Jan 2021120Hz refresh is totally most useless tech of 2021 and even... more120hz really doesn't effect battery life all that much at all. Quit talking about stuff you know nothing about.

[deleted post]Here is my personal preference would be: DFiQTY

D - Around 70mm or slightly slimmer. So "large" phone category.
            F - 17:9 is preferred. 16:9 and 21:9 are ok. Nothing stupid like 18:9, 19:9, or 20:9
i - 1080p its not the sharpest, but even with PenTile its sharp enough for me
Q - 120Hz-Dynamic is smoooooth. Point of diminishing returns at 144Hz.
T - Round corners, but flat sides, and flat display.
Y - 85% Screen-to-Body is compact, whilst giving you some bezel for comfort

            PS:
First off, I like LCDs for their balanced colours, bright whites... but I'm converted to the OLED team mainly due to "Dark Mode" and Always-On-Display. Huge battery savers there.

It is true that an LCD (RGB) is sharper than OLED (PenTile). And its noticeable at 1080p resolutions. So for a PenTile-OLED to match a 1080p-RGB-LCD, well the OLED needs to step up to 1440p resolution. You can get RGB-OLED, instead of PenTile, Samsung did this with the Galaxy S ii, S3, and Note 2. However, PenTile is a technology, and it is specifically designed to help show a higher resolution image by using lower power (and cheaper).... it achieves this by "sharing" subpixels. So technically OLED is superior to LCD, and PenTile is superior to RGB. Just like how Dynamic-Refresh-Rates are a superior technology to Static-Refresh-Rates, as they provide most (but not all) of the smoothness whilst using lower power.

So an OLED with 1080p-RGB-Static-120Hz definitely WILL look sharper, and feel smoother than an OLED with 1080p-PenTile-Dynamic-120Hz. However, the battery life savings from the latter will be huge that the differences (slight improvements) of the former aren't justifiable. And that was my thought process when choosing my preferences :D

a 90hz OLED is the best display

120Hz refresh is totally most useless tech of 2021 and even more damaging destroying battery life. I doubt there is any or very less mobile game that support 120hz. for ps5 and xbox may be. but both not using battery then it is ok . for normally video viewing i hardly notice any different between 60 hz and 24 hz. so 60 should be enough. those stupid that buy 120hz screen phone viewing eventually change back to 60 hz to save battery life. so sad.

Just as we humans are different, phones also need to be different. GsMArena should be driving this agenda home so that manufacturers see the need for using such features to differentiate their products. Some need 4k screens for sharp visuals and watching content, some need 1080p for optimal viewing and screen on time. Othera only need 720p for the best battery life. Otherwise this idea of praising high refresh rates for no reason will make manufacturers start pairing snapdragon 460s and mediatek P35s with high refresh screens yet their processing prowess cannot deliver those frames when needed. This is exactly the same behavior that led to the huge camera bump in every smartphone regardless and the several useless camera gimmick.

How is the performance a downgrade? The performance is definitely improved. By cores, fabrication, and even for exynos since now Samsung ditched the large custom cores.
Specifically the large ones. Cause custom cores was not the issue. Just the fully custom larger cores was.
Having their regular custom modified arm cores is what used to always give exynos the advantage in fact.

And there are some improvements as well. But I do agree many more draw backs every year. And from most companies unfortunately.

Samsung is now treating its fan as stupid. downgrade screen to 1080 and don't give charger even since galaxy note 4 there is 1440 p screen. wtf. yes Samsung use this skill, in note 20 it also give 1080p and plastic back then all buy note 20 ultra... same here if those want buy cheap they buy a 10 series. those buy flagship will not mine pay more... so what the point give s21 better spec people will buy cheaper and profit will be less it is better if they buy 21 ultra profit more... so smart . but bye I will not buy Samsung anymore.

that is a psychological condition, where you are bias on what you think is best due to lack of experience...
same can be said to high refresh rates, display size, etc, though some concerns are legit, like something doesnt deliver the expectation...
pixel density appreciation is similar to appreciation on audio quality, some people argue that there is no much difference if they do not appreciate the added details, or if they are physically constrained...
now, focusing on 4k display... so far xz premium has the most densed display followed by z5 premium, xz2 premium then the xperia 1... the latter (both mk 1 and 2) are even oled, where pixels appear less dense than on ips, a 1080p led is comparable to 720p lcd (when it comes to density)...
as for that pixel density (600+) on a "small phone"... distance is greatly important...
you are not using a phone the way you use a tv...
in a living room setup, a 4k tv should be about 1.5x away from the viewer compared to its diagonal...
so for 48inch, you have to be 72inch a way or about 6ft...
so for a 6.5inch phone, at 9.75inch or less than a ft, will ideally gives you the same perceived density...
your bias is, ideally, backed up by your experiences, and that is where you learn...

O S, 17 Jan 2021https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?chkHRR=selected&c... morenice one... but i mean, can we filter phones with "flat display, 1080p, 120hrr"?
