LG Rollable's fate still undecided, may be canceled even if LG keeps its mobile division

22 January 2021
The LG Wing won awards, but not customers - its poor sales have cast doubt on the performance of the Rollable in the marketplace.

Check prices Apple and Samsung charge outside North America.
Both easily ask more than $1600 for same devices they charge $900 in USA.

V60 was similar price of unlocked Iphone 12 Mini.
5ii was about 200 euros cheaper than 12 Pro in whole Europe , also cheaper in Asia.

In my location, iphone 12 128GB costs 2x the price of Velvet.

This is why some brands do not have sub-$200 devices.
In 2019, Samsung sold more midranges but less flagships than 2018.
      Profits were lower.

Brands like Oppo and Vivo have had many phones over $650 for few years already. The 2018 Oppo Find X was $1000.
Phone that does not have NFC.

They either need to be competitive in terms of price to performance or offer value that is under represented on the market. Things like stock Android, smaller devices, different build materials, etc. Doing the same thing Apple or Samsung does and charging 5% less is a recipe for disaster. I'm not surprised HTC, Sony and LG are all on life support.

impinas, 22 Jan 2021Maybe the LG Wing would have more sales if it was available... moreI do agree with you. A friend of mine had to import his Wing 5G to Malaysia all the way from the USA. That's not a good sign if you ask me.

Even for an avid LG fan like me, I do think the rollable screen is pretty much a gimmick at the moment. To be brutally honest, I'm still struggling to see a single benefit of the rollable screen. Saving space? I'm not so sure if the phone itself in standard guise is already too big in the first place. Screen flexibility? I'd rather have two display like the detachable DualScreen case instead.

Like, taking away them all, makes the phone worth half the price, or a quarter, for me. I've yet to be influenced to buy a Samsung phone. I have another phone with the Samsung image sensor, which I love, but the stupid 48mp thing, can't produce direct 48mp images or 8k video. The question then becomes, why not 12mp on a cheaper phone?

Seriously. Just run it differently. The latest phones were the wrong way. The top end were good, but had to go cheesier or better. Too many phones.

Stick to three to six phones. $100 4k Mini phone, with great video and pictures as introductory phone. $200 mid range. $300 mid range with pro video 4k, and 8k. $400 high end. $500 high end 8k pro video. $1000 rollable. What could go wrong? In this crazy over priced market, if they style it right, and gave it even better media acquisition abilities (musicians, video and film camera people, journalists, sakes, trades and construction, science and engineering (size estimation and 3D mapping features, and detailed pictures of things) it would be an obvious advantage.

The other areas are privacy functions, desktop like app functionality (business), gaming, and pretty much lock any kind of spy like access of apps and system.

The above is aimed at certain Asian phone and Nokia.

Begin a budget affirdable series with bit lower profit margin 8f you want to stay viable in the competition like samsung M series....if samsung dint discontinue terrible J series and bring in M series they would have lost market...its their midrange and budget segment thats keeping samsung alive still...so instead of making overexpensive phones lg or sony should start value for money offerings if they want to survive...otherwise android goes to china fully

Anonymous, 22 Jan 2021Because these big companies are charging higher and higher ... moreHuawei is great example of this, when they were just growing their business out of the China, their prices were noticable lower than Samsung, LG, Apple and so on. But the bigger Huawei got the pricier their phones got. And eventually their phone prices were same than these old dogs. It just shows how chinese can keep the price low as long as they don't do global business. Xiaomi prices have already gone up and propably keep happening in future too if they want to compete in global market. Because stuff like marketing and advertising asks lot of money if you want to build your brand image. Just like Huawei did, their ads were everywhere and they hired local celebrities like musicians and sport stars to marketing their phones. Now i'm seeing Xiaomi is doind same, before we had zero advertising from Xiaomi.

Maybe the LG Wing would have more sales if it was available for buying.

Samsung, for example, gradually removed the led light, the headphone jack, the memory card slot, the cable, the charger and the flat screen, while still asking for a HUGE amount of money, an incredible amount of it... For what reason shall I pay two monthly salaries for their flagship? Give me everything and I will pay, but right now nope, nope, nope. In every segment, Samsung phones are way overpriced for their specs.

What I care about is that LG keeps its mobile division. Then keep consistency in its features and products, it should atleast be known for, removable battery smartphones, secondary screen, reduced bloatware, timely updates. Could include a certain interaction of their phones with their entire product stack eg tv sets, washing machines etc. as a marketing strategy.

Maybe because cost of running the business is also getting higher but i'm sure trying to earn more profits is among one of them. That's why its so hard to compete with the Chinese unless you offer better services and overall quality, which is often what the Chinese lack cos they are more interested in just selling you the products. I think once everything can be automated at the manufacturing level, cost will go down.

Of course they aren't and they never will, it just that chinese companies are operating differently than global companies, these global companies can never sell products as cheap as chinese, it's not really in their hands. it will be really interesting to see how android market look in few years, is there any other android company in smartphone market than chinese ones? If people stop supporting these big companies and are buying those cheaper chinese knockoff phones, where we are going in long term? I think this is very alarming sign what happening for LG because HTC is next and so on and direction where smartphone market is going, just because people want to save some bucks and not support these big companies.
