Yee, 23 Jan 2021Yet another thing that Australia does better than any other... moreA taxi driver is a bad example, most of them steal and cheat, while Uber returns money if someone tries to cheat.
Increasing the tax for eg google only means that there will be more advertising on the internet

It's not Google's fault. It was a result of the Australia's media not responsive enough to respond to the trend : people are shifting from conventional media to digital. Don't blame Google, they just provide a tool to help people find the news that they're interested in.

Need some advice on accessing map and games without Google services.

Not saying that Google shld pay for the royalties.
But, I don't think it is good to only have Google/android and apple/iOS as the only 2 major platform for smartphone.

Yet another thing that Australia does better than any other country in the world.

I agree with this article that online advertising killed paper copy ones, but so did ebooks killing printed books.

I'd love to see them tech giants paying a significant portion of their income as an income tax in particular countries.

In the future with likes of tesla and autonomous vehicles all taxi drivers will loose their jobs, what then?

It's a price of progress and a small guy is always the one to pay.

          Peace

            what did china do.

            For starter

Investing $2.1 Trillion into technology sector for next 5 years.

Custom home made processor based on RISCV.

Getting rid of Windows and coming up with Linux Fork.

Developing GPU to combat AMD and NVIDIA ( both most likely to get banned before 2030)

the news websites should give royalties to google, since google helps users to easily find the articles.

Stondec100, 23 Jan 2021I'm rooting for Australia here. Every other country sh... moreWhat was that 1.1% on,. Gross profit (not really profit) or net profit (real profit).

What is Google making out of news content. It's likely not much, but offers, an attractive service which they should pay a bit for, or is it to punish them for violating the original services worth. I'm a subscriber to a news corp paper online, and I'm not getting much for the subscription anyway. But, I still think they have a bit of a case.

The solution is to firewall everything they don't want Google to access, simple. The real business problem is on the media side. The business is not being run well enough. Media has being in denial of the primacy of the internet, rather than working with it. News limited news paper viewer is atrocious on my phone, and really is a big subscription 0. I have to use a tablet to use it properly. But, who designed it, some random web site designer, who think throwing click to code laden down with fancy backends is the way to go, rather than functional, practical, lean and mean. They don't even lay it out like a proper in line news feed. All this going back and forwards on a mobile phone to use it deeply, it just too much work to read. But. Most people are going want to use the phone, and the phone instead. I've been thinking of the prospects of starting a broad area regional TV station online with local newspapers. With the innovations of news, that's possible. If news were on top of things, it would be much less likely.

The sea comes so far, otherwise it's a tsunami threatening the online companies, and the opposite is true. If the sea drains down, the fish die. Each has to do a good job and respect each other, in order to survive a d fund a balance. The onliners didn't, before the government stepped in. Now they regret it as a lot worse than they aimed, which was inevitable.

Didn't they just stop news in Spain or something, rather then all search?

Do, are they going get rid of the Google app search on mobile phones?

Since the AI debacle, where it only had as much sense as a small child, search stopped working aswell. Now it takes 10x (generous) longer to do comprehensive searches, as absolute match search ability and wildcards don't matter that much to the Child. They better hope that governments don't represent their citizens and go elsewhere to get search times down.

T the Tinkerer, 22 Jan 2021Wow, I wish I only payed 1.1% in taxes...Same here! LOL This is a good move to cut the monopolization of Google in the search engine bit by bit. Monopoly is the worst enemy of the economy!

I'm rooting for Australia here. Every other country should immediately do the same. Google wants to play, they should have to pay also. Can't believe they only paid about 1.1% in taxes. I pay almost 50% in taxes. Not that I'm jealous, but Google, FB, etc have become very destructive, dishonest, and dangerous forces and they've become way too powerful. Absolute power has made them absolutely corrupt.
