Weekly poll results: people say they want small phones, but that is not apparent in sales numbers

14 February 2021
Sales data for the iPhone 12 mini, perhaps the only proper mini flagship on the market right now, is not encouraging.

Small phone lovers are a very vocal minority.

They can't deal with the fact that most people prefers large screen.

They provide a list of reasons and stick by it.... until they get a large phone. Once they have used a larger phone they are converted.

I can't count how many people this has happened to, including me. I love large displays.

And it's much easier to cary/hold (with one hand) compact phone than phablet.
Only those who play games a lot or watch movies on the phone really need that monstrosities

The larger the display, the larger the type contact area and screen not covered by the keyboard.
Yes, you can type in a smaller display but it's easier (and more comfortable) on a bigger one.
We managed to type on those crappy little plastic buttons on our dumb phones too - but nobody wants to go back to that nonsense.

cerealguy, 15 Feb 2021So why don't you just switch from verizon to something... moreEven then, Xiaomi phones lately only carry a couple bands to support US carriers overall. I get why, but it adds to our limited options...

            I have T-Mobile so I'm good.

It's always the same. Being the "loudest" doesn't mean you're the majority.
Many people want big phones, because the only thing they don't do, is making calls.
The want it for watching video, playing games, or even to do some productivity stuff with it.

And sure, why "should" someone that wants a big smartphone shout out and being outraged on Twitter etc. ? They have all the options they want.
Personally I would never even think about buying a phone smaller than 6.4 inch. But that's just me... or is it?

CompactPhones5ever, 14 Feb 2021"Sales are proof small phones are doomed." not ev... moreThe iPhone SE is the cheapest way to get a new iPhone - that's the only reason it sells well.

I think the mini smartphones should be really mini like iPhone 5, otherwise they are useless.

I would like to buy small smartphone if I have money, which I don't need them, but I prefer big smartphone as the main smartphone

Anonymous, 14 Feb 2021Nokia 808 has one camera. Not 3 or 4 like current phones. ... morePhone sizes can be deceiving. Let's look at the phone VOLUME instead. Here are the values in cubic millimeters:

                      Nokia 808 103,677 cubic mm (123.9 x 60.2 x 13.9 mm) - 169gr.
                      iPhone 12 Pro Max 92,932 cubic mm (160.8 x 78.1 x 7.4 mm) -228gr.
                      iPhone 12 77,618 cubic mm (146.7 x 71.5 x 7.4 mm) - 164gr.
                      iPhone 12 mini 62,473 cubic mm (131.5 x 64.2 x 7.4 mm) - 135gr.
                      Samsung S21 Ultra 111,085 cubic mm (165.1 x 75.6 x 8.9 mm) - 227gr.

What a SURPRISE!!! Look at those numbers! Nokia 808 has more room inside than iPhone 12 Pro Max and almost as much as Samsung S21 Ultra!
ACTUALLY, Nokia 808 would have the GREATEST battery life of all, having the smallest screen!
Also, being 14mm thick and 18mm at camera bump and with today's advanced lens system like 108mp camera module has we could have not an 1 inch sensor inside, but a huge MICRO FOUR THIRDS one (17.3x13 mm)!!! This sensor can have almost 200mp. It can do 10x lossless digital zoom for full hd, 5x for 4k and 2.5x for 8k.

I'll say it again, all phone SIZES should have the PRO and the ENTRY LEVEL versions.
                      Mini phones should be thicker.

My ideal phone would like the legendary Nokia 808 (only 169gr.) . This phone should have the same size and thickness for huge camera sensors and battery inside. Zero bezels, no selfie camera but a second smaller screen on the back like ZTE nubia Z20 has. Periscope camera not only for extra tele, but for spectacular macro too. 8k, professional 10 bit shooting on all cameras. That's my feedback for the industry. Please, do that.

I held the iPhone12 mini in my hand and I was overwhelmed by its size. It’s too mini. Atleast the size of slightly bigger than iPhone 8 would have been ok. Samsung S10e is about right

I would like a 'compact' phone but dont agree with the substantially inferior specs offered on the smaller format. Smaller screen = less power drain so smaller battery may give comparable performance. But manufacturers choose to remove resistance, wireless charging, downspect the cameras, downspec the phone finishes. In general the manufacturers choose to ignore the market. I recall having 1 day to choose a replacement phone and said give me the current galaxy. So went from S5 to S7edge. This is when 'compact' stoped being relevant. Result torn pair of $330 Diesel jeans on second wear of jeans. Phone was too big for rear pocket and tore the jeans pocket. Phone was too big for front pocket. So Samsung Galaxys 'compact' range has forevermore been a man-bag to cary in your hand and place on tables because it cant fit in a pocket. That said, if even the 'compact' version needs to be carried in your hand then size is no longer an issue as theyre all too big to be functional as nothing is designed to fit in a pocket.

People here in europe change carriers quite frequently, At least in Slovakia they do. Every time there is a new promotion at some carrier they like, one can change free of charge in like 30 minutes.

The question was "how big a "mini" phone should be?", not "what would you buy?"
I don't want a mini phone, but obviously I can answer a mini phone should be the smallest possible.
Or how to not understand a poll result.

We need smaller flagships, that doesn't mean we are ready to accept a phone with poor battery capacity and battery life. If Apple gave the iPhone mini a better battery, most people would have given it a try. The fault is from the Apple side. Don't blame consumers.

well I want a compact flagship and I've been buying one whenever they were available. I had an S2, a Z1 Compact and now an XZ1 Compact that I'm dying to change. I don't even have the option to buy an android compact flagship, the manufacturers are forcing me to buy 6' and up for the flagship experience, the most compact phone on the market right now is the pixel 5 and you wouldn't call it a flagship in any scenario. The Xperia 5ii? it's taller than the S21! How are sales going to reflect our wants if what we want is not possible to buy!?

PIXEL's are Htc's in all but name...
Remember the insult deal that Google did to to buy the entire HTC design staff etc etc, well pixel range is the work of that team and couple of other Google personnel enslavements..
Google even copied the notorious optimistic HTC over-pricing into the Pixel range !!
And got the same results as HTC did, under-whelming sales, due to perceived lack of value by the majority of possible purchasers..
Too well built, pricier materials, better quality parts etc etc, phone looks nice, feels nice, lasts years and years, pity its use lifetime is only about 18 months, cos then it's off to the back of the draw for years or off into the second hand market, where some models make good money for many years,as do any phones that folk realy wanted when new, but could get, like the ZTE AXON 7,still selling well on ebay etc, it's still ugly, but still sounds briliant and pretty tough too..
Folk want little phones but they don't want inferior spec to bigger version, today, that's impossible in lots of ways, often just lack of space. Ideal phone is identical parts, on different sized motherboards, cheap, simple, but rare, then try building a small gaming phone, have fun trying...
My ideal device is the old 7 inch tablet/phablet size, like the only Samsung device that's ever just worked, no issues at all, a very old original Samsung galaxy gt-p 1000,a proper phablet, a normal phone with a giant screen, or the NEXUS 7 lte, crippled by Google to remain just a tablet, no mobile network calls etc, stupid Google..

I always liked portability. so,I always purchased the smallest footprint avaliable.nokia n85,blacberry pearl, samsung s4mini,sony z5compact,samsung s9. bigger displays of flagships are not big enough to give better user experience for me. but, they are so difficult to use and carry. since bezels disappeared, flagships can provide 6-6.2" big displays in portable formfactors.hope more manufacturers follow apple, samsung, google and sony by providing smaller flagships.
