Weekly poll results: people say they want small phones, but that is not apparent in sales numbers

14 February 2021
Sales data for the iPhone 12 mini, perhaps the only proper mini flagship on the market right now, is not encouraging.

Not "people" in general... Readers of the site... Again same stupid results as the screen resolution - hz poll...

All the people want flagship phones, but most of them actually buy low or mid rangers. This is outside USA and Western Europe, since there people buy only Iphones and expensive Android devices.
In Asia for sure people will never buy a small phone - they want the biggest things.
In the poor countries people buy the cheapest available phones.
And what market left for small non flagship phones? - Eastern Europe. But in Eastern Europe people don't care what phones they use - they just want to have Facebook on it.
The sad truth is that the only people who care for small phones are the people writing under this poll. And perhaps the companies do the right thing producing phablets only - many people don't use computers at all and with big phones they can buy goods, consume paid content...
For me this is sad, but we cannot fight the market and request niche products for such small number of potential buyers.
And of course if one wants to buy a small budget phone, there is always an option for something older but good enough on the second hand market. And such devices are supported by independent ROM makers - for example for my Xiaomi MI 4c there is Android 10 based LineageOS 17.1.

Iphnusngandroidfan, 15 Feb 2021I am an android fan. Can't stand ios however, I purcha... moreWtf? You can't stand IOS, but you still purchase a phone based on that system?
How do you use that iphone 12 mini if you can't stand IOS? You just keep it in your pocket and praise its size? Lol.
You either never had IOS before, so in this case you can't say you don't like something you never used. Or you are lying about not liking IOS. Maybe you are afraid of all these IOS haters on this site and just wanted to keep it safe: "I have bought an iphone guys, but I really hate iphones, so I am with you Android guys", lol.

Iphnusngandroidfan, 15 Feb 2021I am an android fan. Can't stand ios however, I purcha... moreI completely agree with you. I am also thinking about the iPhone 12 mini, even though I really can't stand the iOS. The only things that hold me back is the inferior camera, because I mainly use the phones for taking pictures. But except for the camera and the iOS the iPhone 12 mini is great.

Many of you have mentioned, that all the mini sized phones of the close past was a failure even giving many examples.

But it does not mean that the people do not want mini flagships, it means they do not want inferior mini flagships.

The last real mini flagships was the Xperia Z compacts.
They had the same specs as the bigger variants, expect for screen res and maybe memory (not sure about this). When was it? 2013-2014? Since that time no one was able to make Pro normal sized flagship phone (now we call it mini, but my Nokia 700 was mini, a 4.5-5"phone is normal IMO, and the nowadays 6.5-7"ones are utterly huge.)

I am also waiting for a real mini sized flagship phone, and now I would buy even if Apple makes it and there will be no Android on it in the end (which would be sad, but I do not want to buy a phone that I can not handle with one hand)

Iphnusngandroidfan, 15 Feb 2021I am an android fan. Can't stand ios however, I purcha... moreEven if Xiaomi made such a phone, Verizon's stingy and won't let ya use it on their network. That's why I don't like their direction in the slightest; especially with the dependency of mmWave.

Hence why I hope Asus and Sony come out with mmWave for the states; you could potentially head for the next Xperia 5.

Interesting, but could it be that there are other factors (apart from size ) that are killing their sales.

These poll results can never taken seriously for example many claims prefer stick shifter but at the end most people buy auto.

I would get a 12 Mini in a heartbeat, but the Pebble watch I still use works better with Android, and I'm waiting for some other manufacturer to misread the market and copy Apple's 12 Mini so I can buy it :)

For me the best size would be about 145x70mm which by today's standards is definitely mini. But what options do I really have? If you like pure Android (or almost pure) then Pixel would be great choice, but the most affordable Pixel 4a isn't avalable in our region. Motorola used to be a great option but now all the new phones are huge, as far as I know there's no midsize option. Samsung UI isn't my favourite, Realme etc don't really have any small phones and for my taste their UI is only so and so. I quite like Apple UI and some iphones are perfect size, but Apple phones aren't the cheapest out there and they don't even have 3.5 jack, lol! About 99 % o the new phones are huge so the only way is go for a compromise. If the choice in the midsize range were bigger then we could really see what size the buyers prefer.

People want a small phone that is affordable and feature-rich not a small phone which costs INR 65K

Mini phones should also priced in mini. You cannot price $700-730 for a mini phone without even charger and headphone. Not to mention, horrible battery.
A perfect mini phone should be priced at ~$500 cutting 5g since it is no use currently.
My perfect mini is a fatter (to house large battery) iphone 6s space grey with no bezel and no antenna band. Slight higher dimension than the original 6s also okay to house larger battery.

Its because small phones are expensive, low value for money, poor on spec sheet. I am looking into the pixel 5a this year. Google seems to make big strides on the compact phone front and im looking forward to buying it.

Because Apple still sell SE(2020), Xr and 11 BELOW 12 mini price. Same tragedy that happened with iPad mini 5 and iPad 6,7,8

                                  Basic Problem : Battery Life.
We have all become such addicted to our screens, that we need really good battery life out of the phone (Look at Samsung release phones with upto 7000 mAh battery).
That's not possible in a Mini Flagship.
                                  Case Closed.

2021 onwards small is obsolete hardware 👎

Manufacturers dump the best features into the biggest phones yet people are surprised when they sell better than the sizes people prefer. I've already stopped buying phablets though.

Compact or mini phones were a niche market.
Only a minority would buy them globally, companies have stopped producing them due to low demand in Android. Buying a mini phone sacrifices more than what it really gives. Also, manufacturing parts specific to the compact phones increases the price per part thus increasing their overall pricepoint for what it actually offer in specs. Phone companies will profit better when they'd just use the bigger form factor and re-use most of the parts as much as possible lowering the price due to high parts supply, increasing the consumer preferrability thus increasing sales volume. Xiaomi, Samsung, and even Apple have done this to name a few, heck Samsung would even revive an old SoC just to escape from paying more royalties to new ARM cortex cores.
