It has everything to do with what we say "potential".
But the question is , are they going to?
These kind of steps excites me the most.

imparanoic, 16 Feb 2021more chances that 'Nothing' could design and rele... moreThe closet thing to a dap/phone are the LG flagships, Vivos with AKM dacs (why did they remove the headphone jack??!!!) and the Xiaomis and Sonys with hi-res audio certification.

It would be killer and crazy expensive if Nothing incorporated a Chord or iFi dac/amp with a 2.5mm bal output into their phone.

shaantalk, 16 Feb 2021Now they will make "Nothing Essential" ?Yea that was Rubin's tactic (No 3.5mm jack, no sd card, abysmal battery. Not one strong selling point) and Pei was also the guy who removed the 3.5mm jack right after his own poll told him not to, so we should expect nothing from that guy and he's not even hiding it.

Anonymous, 16 Feb 2021LDAC has been part of android since android 8. Any curren... moreactually factually inaccurate.

The chipset must support it as well to work, yes, Ldac is standardised codec on android 8 onwards as result of cooperation between sony and google, even if the option is not in standard menu, you can unlock developer's mode to access the option on all android phones/tablets, but some system on a chip simply don't support Ldac such as Exynos and non dimensity Mediatek system on a chip, it won't work, that's why european and asian galaxy phones can not use ldac mode (once you select it, after 1 second automatically goes back to bluetooth 4.2/sbc) as it use exynos chip, but on samsung galaxy s6 tablet, s7 as well (which i own and used with my sony WH-1000XM3 on ldac mode) you can use ldac mode as it's snapdragon system on a chip.

I'm willing to pay $1000 for Carl Pei's device but it has to be a premium in every thing.

Only the CPU may be near $200.
Some phones have screens that cost about $90.
Even the subpar iphone 12 has hardware that costs about $350.

Of course realme x50 pro is way cheaper than op8 pro.
                        It is way inferior device.

OnePlus sells more now than when they were making SD8xx powered midranges (OP1 - OP6T), even at half price they charge now.

So essential became nothing. So essentially nothing, will become something, and nothing will become essential?

You know, normally people had an hard enough time understanding tech people, before this.

Essential PH1 was a great all around phone, I used it for more than a year which is record for me. Great build quality. They were dumb with putting money into development of some crazy concepts, it was enough just to keep upgrading original design year over year like apple does.

Anonymous, 16 Feb 2021Which brand name will they use now, "Essential" o... moreits better than owning nothing, seriously tho everytime we use the word nothing we will now have to put in brackets, no pun intended lol

                                nothing is essential

more chances that 'Nothing' could design and release an audiophile orientated android phone and maybe even digital audio player, maybe with 4.4 mm balanced and 3.5mm unbalanced output, ldac and aptx hd wireless high bitrate audio and a decent chipset, only time will tell.

Which brand name will they use now, "Essential" or "Nothing"? Essential is better than nothing.

If Carl Pei manages to make the Essential phone "non essential" by reviving the Old Oneplus, it will be an killer brand for sure, just like Poco. Not like the lazy innovating oneplus, charging $700+ without meaningful innovations.
If essential manages to make an $400 Flagship killer, i am sure Realme, Poco, Xiaomi will struggle against it. Oneplus will die soon because of too high price, no innovation, trash products at low end
