Weekly poll results: 128GB is the new sweet spot for base storage, microSD cards still important

21 February 2021
A bit over two years ago 64GB was considered a fine starting point, but now people are aiming at 128GB and higher.

Personally I only need 64gb on board storage with sd card if needed. As I don't take video or many pictures.

Give us a SD card with the speed of sata SSD and then I will be happy with 64 GB internal storage :)

I still remember when I was so happy for my new 256mb sd card in my 6600.

AnonD-844232, 21 Feb 2021You taking this minimalistic topic too seriously... Not imp... moreI'm seeing you're pushing your opinion in more aggressive way. If you're really that kind of an online guy then live with that, Don't think majority wants cloud backup $hit which isn't convenient for most of the people. Not everywhere you'll find stable high speed internet that is unlimited or cheap. SanDisk 1TB SD card cost around $200 and this sd card can last for decade if it used properly, on the other hand, let's say Google Drive that offers 2TB storage @$99.99/yearly. So in about a decade you're paying literally $999. Is that convenient to you? Have cloud storage companies payed you well? Having an option won't hurt anyone. You can just ignore it but don't courage money hungry companies to ditch SD card slot completely. You're generalizing fact that doesn't fit to this world just yet. So stop all this bs.

AnonD-844232, 21 Feb 2021Santi dope get life, you too much spending on gsmarena com... moreOh really? I'm glad you're watching over me here. Thanks!
Actually, I just like to comment whenever I'm free with my time, and I mostly visit here just to read news. I only comment on things that I'm interested to speak up in, but rest assured that I won't reply to everything here. After all, I've already said more than enough about what I should say here, so it's already your fault if you still don't get my point. :D

AnonD-844232, 21 Feb 2021You taking this minimalistic topic too seriously... Not imp... moreOh sure it's how you want to save your files. Then what if your home is totally out-of-reach by internet connection? And before you say anything, yes it does exist! Again, NOT ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD HAS INTERNET ACCESS.
Let alone a fast and stable one to upload files to cloud.

1TB micro SD card is still rare. Even so, they would still be cheaper than the same cloud storage plan for 5 years or so. But at least with micro SD card, you would still have it with you after many years to come, and if you're careful enough with your things, it may still work after about 20 years or so.
This is just not about micro SD cards, as there are also others like external hard drive, in which a 2TB one costs just around $100 in one-time payment, as compared to twice the price for a cloud storage in just 2 years of use.
Also, phones nowadays can easily support up to 2TB of micro SD cards. After all, the LG G4 from 2015 did support it, so no way newer phones can't handle the same capacity, if not more.

Having the option to locally store your files offline is still much more convenient than having to wait for available internet connection. Fair enough? It's a simple logic that everybody should easily know. Micro SD card is something that you can have everywhere you go, while cloud storage is something is still limited in many regions in the world. How difficult is that to comprehend???

My iPhones from 5 years ago only has 32 GB and that's all I need. The only things I store in them are my music. That's exactly 1600 songs and only 6 GB. That, and a dozen games. The rest, I'll stream from Pluto TV, Spectrum TV, Netflix, Tubi, Peacock, and Airy TV. And I generally use YouTube more than those apps.

Just stream and use Google Photos. The need for higher storage for the average consumer is becoming less and less these days. It's really for folks who might be content creators, just needs to store 200 GBs of the songs, or just wants to carry as much content as possible locally without need of a data plan.

I really haven't cared about storage space in years.

                  Bare minimum: 32 GB
                  Sweet spot: 128 GB

I don't record in 4K or whatever. I don't store video files higher than 720p. We need to get removable battery back. I want to keep a phone for years and years. That's way more important to me.

AnonD-844232, 21 Feb 2021Jesus man why would you transfer those 1000 files when u ca... moreLolwut? I thought I already explained it to you that not everyone can afford to annually pay for a cloud storage that they cannot access when there's no internet connection.

Yes, automatic cloud backups are nice and all, but easily transferring files without the need of an internet connection is still something that's not possible with cloud storage.

Dude, you're literally just repeating your claims that I've already answered in my previous replies, what's wrong with you??

NOT EVERY PART OF THE WORLD HAS ACCESS TO INTERNET. Period.

I'm good with 128 GB. Most of my stuff is on Google Photos. y Pixel 3 and Essential Phone both have a 128 GB base storage. My LG G5 has a 128 GB micro-SD card on top of its 32 GB base storage. My iPhone SE and 7 each have only 32 GB. With Google Photos and streaming, my bare minimum is still only 32 GB.

You know what I really yearn for? More metal or plastic back. And bring back removable battery! Once my Essential Phone battery is dead, I can't replace it. I've read my Pixel 3 is hard to fix without breaking the glass and putting it back can look shoddy. We need phones to be easier to fix again.

My LG G5 is still my favorite smartphone ever because of its removable battery and easy way to fix it. Can last me years and years without worrying about an internal battery expanding and creating a bulge. I'm typing on my G5 right now as we speak. After 5 years, still quite smooth and battery lasts longer on a red 3200 mAh Shenmz battery.

I don't really care about an SD card slot. A portless phone is the future IMO, and to solve the lack of storage space in a phone, they already come with big amounts of it these days, for a very tiny extra cost

                          Problem is:

Many people like me want better phone, but do not need 128/256/512GB.
Nor 8/12/16GB RAM (I've heard about upcoming phones with 20GB RAM for 2021).
So , we end up paying more for unnecessary stuff.

Just slap in a 512gb microSD and you have your entire pr0n collection on the go + some space for those few console games you love. Jokes aside, removable storage is becoming faster and truly how many people need UFS speeds? If you want an exabyte of storage for professional 8k video on your phone you should probably be looking at custom made hardware an not the general public. That being said when is a real successor to the Poco F1 (cheap, highest end soc with futureproof amounts of ram, expandable storage, an lcd, a jack(3.5mm), a decent camera, 2 or more day battery life and an open source community to migrate it to the next big linux based mobile os) coming out?

ShubhamDeshmukh, 21 Feb 2021Though I agree that people are moving towards 128 GB becomi... moreAnd some makers are openly putting the ancient micro USB in their phones still

128gb is a *really* good option for most users. but 256 - 512 is better if you plan on future proofing the device and keeping it for 3 - 4 years. in the next year or two, 256gb will be more mainstream as games, pictures, videos get better quality over time. but if you're one of the users who upgrades practically every year with little use for a phone, you're better off with 128 gb storage.

Bottom line is: if you're one of the people with heavy and high quality pictures and videos, woith plenty of apps and games, opt for 256 or 512 gb (for those that do like, photo/video editing in 8k or something) for people who generally use their phones for communications and photos, you're better off with 128 gigs, Photos in 1080p or 8k take up like: 200mb to 2gb, (it also depends if it's hdr or not). software updates usually come in every year or two so that won't eat much storage so yeah. there you have it. my personal storage guide (2021)
