YUKI93, 10 Mar 2021Lol please, 6.1" is already small? Don't make me ... moreDepends on the aspect ration and how you wrap it. Phone no longer have same 16:9 screens, remember? 12 is 146.7mm tall, that's 5mm shorter than next small flagship s21 right now (with 71.5mm vs 71.2 mm wide and 7.4 vs 7.9mm being close) and both indeed are indeed small enough for most people.

IpsDisplay, 10 Mar 2021Good news this is prime example for social media folks etc ... moreGoogle, Facebook, Twitter also do the same.... They recycle opinions that they agree with and remove anything else that they don't agree with. Then this opinion is marketed inside this big tech echo chamber.

IpsDisplay, 10 Mar 2021But this isn't a joystick... This a a smartphone ... moreIt is an EXAMPLE, which work well, because, as I said, it apply to ALL markets, from PC mouse pad up to jet liners.
Rather than not doing anything else that the only design that most people are tired off, you just produce less of the least popular, as long as it is profitable there isn't any arguments to NOT do it.

Cars are a great analogy, they are MUCH more complicated to make than smartphones, they have a lot of size, shape, materials difference, they need to respect standards, they have quite a bit of electronic which rather than aiming at raw power is aimed at power efficiency (as most onboard computers), they even have displays too now.

Yet, we haven't a single type (lets say SUV or Compact) with a single engine, a single size, a single set of options, there is a HUGE diversity, from tiny to long to tall to offroad, many engine power, type, many options, etc.

What it cost mean NOTHING, profits are what matter, and as long as something is profitable, it is a success.
And the brand images would be MUCH better if they simply made multiple phones with different designs and options, rather than constantly the only same one.

In fact, if they were really about cost, they would do what you said, they would re-use many of the same core components to make different phones with variations, rather than each being totally new yet identical (from a user point of view), which would allow to streamline updates by simply building variations off of the same base hardware, which would make updates and making many unique phones easy.

The ONLY reason why they don't, and they keep the same 50% punch hole 50% teardrop notch, 50% chances curved display on high end, camera setup based on power rather than price range, removal of many desired features, etc, is because users give them excuses to do so, like all those idiots who are against the 3.5mm Jack, the Pop Up, or anything that doesn't match their own preferences, as if EVERY phones in the market should be like that.
Result, because if this toxic community, it is impossible to really know what people do desire, so they don't even care about trying to make phones that are different, since people will buy them anyway.
In EVERY other markets, even the smallest niches have products to choose from, some even have a huge variety, that's why I talked about Joystick, look at homemade cockpit hardware, those are the most niche hardware you can buy, yet there is still a huge diversity in that despite it being expensive to make.
The irony is that the smartphone market have literally the biggest potential for diversity, and it would one of the easiest market in which to do it, also the most profitable as many buy phones regardless of what it is, making many niche products having a bigger potential customer reach than the targeted group.

So the fact we haven't got this, each model having multiple sub-variant with different designs, specs, etc (which is a LITTLE what Motorola is doing), is one of the countless signs that the smartphone industry is totally messed up.
When you make a poll asking people what they want, the huge majority say they want A, and you make B, and that this is just one of the many identical example and similar behaviors we can quote, it mean there is something wrong.

They have already sold over 10 million of these iPhone 12 mini phones, for everyone else than Apple it would be huge hit. There is space for these small phones, but majority wants bigger, i don’t think Apple will leave this market.

galaxy a71 user, 10 Mar 2021Because no one wants small phones.I do. Bought on release. Been waiting for a decent phone in that normal size.

Anonymous, 10 Mar 2021Yeah the closest thing to that is an iPhone SE 2020 but I d... moreYes, those were the same phones I found from my research. I'm not totally against the idea of an iPhone but, it's more restricted and a lot of my favourite apps are on Android. The problem with the smaller iPhones is that the screen size is going in the opposite direction where it's a bit too small... I know 4.7" is not a big difference compared to the ZUK, but ideally I wanted something a bit bigger without getting to the size of the 8 Plus which is 158cm tall and weighs over 200g.

XZ2 Compact must be the last flagship level normal-sized phone. That narrower screen is a nuisance, and the big killer for me is that it only has 64GB internal storage. I need to upgrade to 128GB. And I don't like using SD cards for multiple reasons; security, slower speed and having files spread out across two different sources...

Another problem is that these phones do not have a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is something I use every day and do not want the hassle of an adapter dongle.

I think my only choice is to cave in and buy a giant modern phone. Right now I am looking at Realme 7 5G which has 120Hz IPS. The reason I don't consider OLED is because the PWM flickering causes me headaches and eyestrain, and DC dimming isn't a proper solution to that problem either.

Too bad reviewers decided to sabotage it by pretending there are battery issues. I've never had an issue making it through a day on mine.

galaxy a71 user, 10 Mar 2021Because no one wants small phones.Nah, it's more like not many people want at that price.
TLDR: 12 mini is too small for one and only phone and too pricey for a secondary.
TLDR2: Sort of agree, Not everyone wants small phones, and those who do, not every one of them wants to pay full price.

The number people who need and will pay premium for such small phone is tiny, for other people getting phone with screen as big as they can handle makes more sense as it enables better multimedia consumption and more screen estate for games. For these people it makes more sense to get 11, 11 pro 11 pro max or add that $100 and buy 12. For these people such phone to make point , is to serve as secondary, a companion device to its bigger screened partner : make calls, basic internet, music and some. For anything else screen the bigger, then better : Emails- big screen, Movies - Big screen, Internet - that too, games- off course biggest screen possible. And for a secondary device, for a small iPhone, 12 mini costs too much. Yes, SE sold well, but it was compact iphone for $399 and even that was sort of pricey. Even if $399 for a secondary device wasn't all bad , $699 definitely is.

galaxy a71 user, 10 Mar 2021Because no one wants small phones.Small phones are good, tiny phones are not good. The size of the normal iPhone 12 is perfectly fine. This is small by today's standards when the majority of phones come with 6.5" screens. The iPhone 12 mini is too small.

I'd bet good money one of them winds up switching OSes to get a used 12 mini down the line if Android manufacturers assume its relative failure is proof that people only want Absolute Unit phones.
