Like I mentioned in a previous comment, even Huawei's own spokesperson admitted to using mostly AOSP codes.
What makes it different from "Android skins" is the fact that Huawei's goal is to replace everything eventually with their own codes, instead of comfortably being a forked Android forever like Fire OS (though who knows, Amazon might do the same in the future).
Saying "HarmonyOS is just Android" is true if you were to treat it as a complete product which it is not. It's a work in progress. That's like saying "haha this 2 month old baby can't even speak English lol what a loser". It's just irrational.
I get that people are angry 'cause Huawei made it seem like they were gonna build everything entirely by themselves from the ground up. Huawei's notorious for shitty marketing, and we all know that already.

Daily reminder to believe facts out of people who actually bothered to check what Huawei is actually shipping. Reading their pptx is the same as believing everything they say as true lol.
So far, according to the betas, it's Android. I dont know if they will switch away to their own thing in the future, but for now, Android skin it is.

Just because... moreMacOS is largely Unix, with some BSD low-level code being used lately on, incrementally that result eventually some code from FreeBSD were used in the kernel. However, in no ways, Apple ever denied or discredit its roots in anyways.
Huawei on other hand, has being abused many open-source project and/or libraries and claim it their own innovation from grounds up -- even for "HarmonyOS". That just top no shame, bar none. Period.

Harmony just replaced some Google stuff with their Huawei counterparts, and renamed most mentions of Android to HarmonyOS. Right now, HarmonyOS is just an Android skin like EMUI was, though executives have said they're planning to replace most of Google's programming with Huawei's ones, in a way that it runs AOSP apps.

Just because something is based on something, it doesn't make it the same. HarmonyOS may have roots in Android, but that doesn't mean it's the same thing. Not to mention it retains certain common design and makes things compatible easier or just easier to develop or port.
