Shanti Dope, 02 Apr 2021Welp, it seems like the marketing strategy from 90s is much... moreHave you seen Sony Mobile’s performance lately? They’re literally dying. Those Japanese management don’t know two bits about agility. Sony is counting their days. Even the fans here who are pretending to be Sony fans are not buying Sony phones.

Regardless of the numerous rumours from the Internet, I´m so excited about this announce. Hope they improve the current DAC, brightness and selfie camera from Xperia 1II. I hope one day I would have enough money to buy a flagship from Sony again (currently rocking a XZ Premium) hahahha

The only chance Sony has against Samsung is if they come up with a 20x zoom camera! Other then that, they shouldn't even bother!

Nick Tegrataker, 02 Apr 2021Wrong. In many phones (including Pixels), the blank spaces ... moreThat's probably the best way to implement cutout hiding, but sure enough not everyone does this thing.
Again, even if everyone did, it will only mean that a portion of the whole screen will be left unused for a very long time, and if it is an OLED panel, chances are it will be unevenly brighter than the rest of the screen after some time due to degredation.
Preferences, definitely, but it's still much nicer to be able to fully use the whole display without any cutout interrupting it.

Shanti Dope, 02 Apr 2021I know that. My current phone can also do it. Still, I find... moreAnd yes, I do love the Xperia takes on its screen. No cutout with nice cinematic 21:9 screen ratio. Thats a thing Sony should keep on its phone. More practical while unique to Sony among other brands. A brighter screen is needed, which 1iii will improve.

Nick Tegrataker, 02 Apr 2021What? I never said anything to prove your point. You didn&#... moreOh bro, you just did. You just set an example about the SD765G being capable of recording 4K 60fps videos after some other tech sites mentioned it.
If it was indeed an official feature, Qualcomm would've had it listed in the specsheet of their product IN THEIR VERY OWN WEBSITE. If they did actually mention it in the main event, but did NOT state it in the official specsheet of the SoC in their website, then definitely it's treated as underpowering it.
Why? Because if it was an official feature that Qualcomm offered from the start, then they wouldn't be missing out every little important detail about it, not even in their very own site. Not everyone has the time to watch the official announcement of the SoC, so the full specifications of it should be indicated in their site.

I could unlock the 4K 60fps feature on my phone because I initially thought the SoC cannot handle it (the main sensor IMX686 definitely can). Why did I thought it wasn't capable of it? Because I simply read the official specsheet of my phone's SoC directly from Qualcomm, and they did NOT indicate that it was capable of shooting 4K 60fps, regardless if they stated it in the announcement or not. I am saying that they're hiding the true potential of their SoCs in some ways in simple reasons like this, okay? Get it? Clear now? No? Ok.

For the SD888 handling 4K 90Hz, I misread your comment so apology for that. Still, it could definitely be possible that the SD888 will be able to handle 4K 90Hz or 120Hz just fine if last year's SD865/865+ can already handle 2K 144Hz.

Shui8, 02 Apr 2021In case u dont know, if u hide the notch/hole in Huawei, no... moreI know that. My current phone can also do it. Still, I find no-cutout screen with minimal and equally-sized bezels more attractive than almost no bezel at all.
              To each his own, perhaps.

Why so late? Xperia flagships were usually presented in February, for many years.

Shanti Dope, 02 Apr 2021Welp, I never really had any idea that the SD765G can actua... moreWhat? I never said anything to prove your point. You didn't know that the SoC inside your phone was capable of handling 4K60 recording and proceeded to assume that it was some sort of hidden feature that Qualcomm is not publicising. It turned out they made it clear that it can indeed handle the said video resolution & frame rate in the announcement, but now somehow you're reaching the conclusion that "Qualcomm often just doesn't let their SoCs perform at their best".. sorry but what kind of logic am I seeing here?

It's always the phone manufacturers that lock certain features of SoCs, not the chip makers. The company that made your phone decided to strip the feature away from the stock camera app, and that's why you could "unlock" the feature using Gcam (because your phone's Camera2API had a 4K60 recording support for some reason). What I said, if anything, implies that SD888 CANNOT run a 4K resolution at 90/120Hz refresh rates.. not the other way around.

Anonymous, 02 Apr 2021How is it wasting space?? When only one icon worth of space... moreIn order to hide the notch, the whole horizontal space where the punch hole camera is located will need to be turned into black bar, which would make it look like a normal bezel instead of a screen displaying black. Of course it's quite a waste since it occupies more than just one icon; it could be used to display around 5 notification icons and time there.

But you just proved my point even further; Qualcomm often just doesn't let their SoCs perform at their best, so there's definitely a big chance that the SD888 can easily handle 4K 90Hz display.
Of course, it will be variable to save power. The phone wouldn't be able to keep running at full 120Hz all the time anyway, and besides, not everyone really needs 4K 120Hz, but the option to have it for those who want or need it is definitely appreciated. In this regard, the Xperia 1 III will rival the Galaxy S21 Ultra for the best display on a smartphone.
