It's time for Sony to show out its 2021 phone lineup.

Another aspect of this phone that I'm having a bit of concern over is the camera. Will they improve on the AE and auto HDR where Xperia 1 II was stumbling upon? Will they fix the detail smudging in low light? QB sensor for better digital zoom quality and optional high resolution mode? How about having a sensor with their own equivalents of Samsung's Smart ISO and Smart ISO Pro for better low light performance and artifact-free HDR?

Back in 2020 they managed to impress people with ridiculously fast burst mode and eye AF, but the competition is slowly catching up in those areas as well (X60 Pro series comes with eye/body AF). The rumoured periscope would be only good if they had a way to deal with the intermediate zoom range, so what's Sony's solution for it? There are so many questions that Sony may have to answer.

There are rumours that the screen will reach up to 1300 nits of brightness which is definitely much more than 15% if true.

While I keep supporting Sony for the inclusion of a headphone jack and an expandable storage, with Xperia 1 III this year they might face one huge problem - Battery life. 4K panel is factually very power hungry despite some people claiming otherwise, and there's a possibility that Sony would allow users to choose the refresh rate between FHD 120Hz and 4K 60Hz (Honestly, it's really hard for me to imagine that they would just slap the 60Hz panel on a 2021 flagship), where the former option would lead to significant power draw compared to the already battery-draining latter due to the number of rendered pixels remaining unchanged.

SD888 too could pose some issues in this regard, as it doesn't have a great GPU efficiency and heats up readily while consuming up to 11W of power at the peak performance state. Manufacturers tackled the issue through different methods; some applied more aggressive throttling than others to extend the battery life (e.g. Samsung), some decided prioritise the performance and paid less attention to the battery life (Xiaomi) and others used a lower res panels (Vivo) to compensate for it. Being a camera-centric device that is expected to be used for prolonged period of time for its manual photo and video control, I don't think none of those approaches would work out well for Sony. It would be interesting to see how they would possibly deal with this.

So, launching in April, and shipping in December? :D

Anonymous, 01 Apr 2021What are you talking about? The Sony Xperia 1 III will prob... moreI'm not talking specifically about this phone, which is definitely expected to cost more. I'm generally speaking about how the cheaper Sony phones that pack even more features than more expensive ones from Samsung and Apple are commonly bashed for offering better value.
It's pretty simple - if the 1 III will cost $1200, the S21 Ultra will be costing no less than $1300 at the same time when this Xperia gets released. In short, mainstream flagships from Samsung and Apple are generally more expensive, but are totally not significantly better devices.

Anonymous, 01 Apr 2021There's little leaks because there's no interest ... moreSamsung J or whatever users certainly don't. Selected few, who care about quality and design, do. It's like Lamborghini vs KIA.

YUKI93, 01 Apr 2021Definitely looking forward to the Xperia 1 iii and 10 iii. ... moreI doubt 64MP main camera and 65w fast charging , the camera part might happen because they want to fill the gap between 1x and 5x but also it might not maybe since they usually don't go with high resolution and for battery sony care about longevity so it is kind of weird if they are going with high speed which causes high temperatures only if they are having it under contro then yeah
Don't know about credibility of this weibo user but hopefully upgrades in screen and battery are true

I am SO ready for this!!! 4,800mAH battery + armory crate copycat (to pick specific apps for 1080p/120Hz instead of 4K) + all the LTE/5G/mmWave networks that can fit in there and I will happily spend my money on a brand that cares about hardware unlike everyone else this year so far (camera is not on my top 6).

Haboubi, 01 Apr 2021good news it seems that Sony have learned from their last ... moreIt has to do with supply chain still affected by pandemic.
The ones that buy higher volume of components had priority this year.

The only flagship smartphone maker to remain practical with no curved screen, no screen cutout, 3.5mm jack, microSD card expandability, proper dual front-facing stereo speakers, charger included inside the box, and charging system that prioritizes battery longevity over speed.
Well apparently, because this is a Sony phone, $900 is way too much for it to some. Meanwhile, the same people are willing to pay $1000 for a phone with less features than Sony's, and then wonder why phone manufacturers are killing sensible features for every generation.

Really hope they will release 6.1 - 6.3 inch flagship. Not looking for much bigger phone.

it seems that Sony have learned from their last year mistake of announcing phones too soon (in February) and release them months later

Whenever I see those notches and punch holes when watching videos on full screen, it really turns me off so hard! Having a little bezel like in the Sony really makes the whole experience a lot better.

Since Samsung has decided to ditch the SD card slot (another failure just like the S6), it looks like Sony is the only brand that catches my interest. Looks like I'm switching back to Sony for my next phone.
