rcl4444, 24 Sep 20125 Million is an amazing figure no matter how you look at it... morePeople now know that iPhone reliably launches I their country, unlike before where some people had to purchase in US etc or risk waiting a long time. iPhone now launches quite quickly worldwide, so it is better to wait and buy the phone officially when it launches in your own country.

My coworker went to the Apple store in San Francisco. She said there were a lot of foreign people that flew to San Fransisco just to buy it full retail in cash.

Anonymous, 24 Sep 2012Apple didnt expect anything, they sold everything what they... more5 Million is an amazing figure no matter how you look at it.
However, Apple's Head of Marketing announced at the i5 launch that every new iPhone to date has sold more than all the previous versions added together, and that this is how the predict sales and demand for the new devices.

So Apple WAS and IS expecting i5 to well outsell i4S.

So why would they not make sure they had enough stock?? Either they internally were not expecting sales to be as good as they claimed, or it's a strategic marketing ploy using 'limited stock'to drive consumer demand and hype higher.

Lets do the maths, iphone 4s sold 4 million phones in less number of countries and 1 years later the upgradesd version iphone 5 sold just 1 million more in the same period of time than older model in more countries, maybe 4 more, In this scenario it means the 4s was a better selling phone. If an older phone sold 4 million phones in 5 countries and a newer phone sold 5 million in 9 countries, which is the faster and better seller?APPLE I5 =FAILURE

RedD, 24 Sep 2012Interesting, so what that says is that Apple made 5 million... moreIt suggests several things:
Mainly that i5 is selling at about the same rate as i4S (as it's been relesed in more countries) - this is still an impressive amount.
Rate is not much exceeding i4S could suggest fans are taking a more "wait and see" attitude as a result of some of the post launch dissapointments with i4 & i4S (antenna-gate, better drain, proximity senso, other)

The "we ran out of stock" excuse is highly suspect. No matter what, Apple was expecting i5 sales to exceed i4S for a number of reasons. This expectation has been made clear by Apple themselves. Therefore why would you not be sure you had enough stock, or at least more than you did for i4S???

Why? Because strategic delays drive consumer hype and demand higher. Not a nice way to treat your loyal fans Apple.
