Especially when there is a promising GN2 sensor from Samsung

    Samsung made sensors aren't as good. Sony has a lot leverage and technology coming from the A7 mirror less cameras.

Samsung uses HM3 sensor which is the successor and more improved version of original one. While the one used in Redmi is HM2 which is new sensor with smaller pixel size and targeted at budget phones.

                        Well, this article is wrong, Samsung had marketshare of 21% in 2019. Now, they have 29% of market share. Gsmarena is comparing whole 2020 sales with 2020H1 instead of comparing it with FY2019. Does this make any sense ??

                          Congrats to Sony, they deserve the accolades, after all, they have been making some of the best sensors for decades, and why apple has been using them. However, when Samsung starts using their own GN2 and or GN3 in all their S series (if that happens, and I think it will next year) then Samsung will take top spot. I am rooting for Sony. But good to see serious competition.

                            To judge sensor, you need to evaluate raw files and not jpeg.
                            Also lens need to be pretty similar performance (to avoid quality difference to impact results) and same settings used by the camera.

                                The current factory is working at 100%.
                                Sony said in 2020 they had to refuse many orders.
                                Now they have new factory to be open beside the current one.

                                All samsung can do it is to increase resolution. It is ridiculous they plan to bring 200, 300 and 600MP to cellphones.

                                      If anything, those crappy 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensors may be padding the Omnivision tally. But then again, those sensors aren't only in the "low-end" phones as you try to imply.
