Sony Alpha engineers explain how they developed the Xperia 1 III camera

19 April 2021
The team had a similar philosophy when working on the Xperia flagship as it did when developing the Alpha cameras.

TooFatTooFurious, 19 Apr 2021It explains why they are so overpriced, but doesn't ex... moreThe speed the light is turned into information decreases as the sensor size increases.

If you check the spec list of Full Frame sensors, you can see that for example the imx410 used by A7iii has its limits at 24MP@19fps@14bit or 24Mp@40fps@12bit.

For example the imx677 (1/2.3") used by GoPro Hero 9 can in theory do 24MP@50fps@12bit.

Also, Xperia is narrower than other flagships, there is no huge cam bump.
Space is a limiting factor as well.

The exmor used by latest xperia are gen6, the most advanced manufacturing process Sony Semicon has. Most are gen2.
The other they sell are just larger, they are not more advanced.

Sony talks about colors, but it seems they don't realise that their colors are not realistic: Blown out highlights ruin colors. Too much noise due to combining not enough frames ruins colors, too.
And the Xperia 1 II had no color temperature slider despite offering a manual mode.
Furthermore, all smartphone cameras need to have a color temperature slider in auto mode because the white balance is very important and is often the only thing that needs to be fixed.

A swarm of anonymouses has arrived. "Sony should've..." or "Sony failed at..." starts again.
      Boooring.

Pixel size is more important than pixel count, to some people.

TooFatTooFurious, 19 Apr 2021It explains why they are so overpriced, but doesn't ex... moreLOL! Every single flagship of 2021 outputs images at 12mp. And besides that you should check the size of the pixel on the sensor as bigger sensors actually feature smaller pixels, then the marketing department bundles same color pixels together and calls them big pixels when they output 12mp image instead of natively 48 or 64 mp image. What those "big sensors" do with their additional pixels is the ability to take two images simultaneously which then get stacked. That's why those images are only 12mp. By default sensor doesn't utilize all of 48mp and then downscales the image to 12mp, no not at all. It divides it pixels to capture two images at the same time. Most of the phones have the ability to use the whole sensor size to take single image but then there is no HDR and post processing procedure.

Anonymous, 19 Apr 2021Instead of wasting time with this explanation, useless of c... moreSony provides many of the parts for the Chinese phone manufacturers, so the stuff it does in-house is aimed a different customer. Not you.

It explains why they are so overpriced, but doesn't explain why they have the smallest sensor size of any mobile flagship.

Xperia 1 iii has tiny 1/1.7 inch main sensor with only 12 MP resolution, and yet the phone is priced near 1200$

Maybe sony is still living in the year 2015.

while this phone looks impressive on some areas, the bezels on top and bottom of the screen makes it look 2018 flagship! plus i don't think much of a photography quality difference between 1III and S21 Ultra even S21 Plus, but with the huge price of the sony, i believe it's a tough sell! plus there is no carrier affiliation in North America, so there will be no trade in program, basically you'll get stuck with your phone for foreseeable future!
again as much as i like sony, Good Luck!

Anonymous, 19 Apr 2021Instead of wasting time with this explanation, useless of c... moreLast year they had 4 phones of difference price range.
Also , they still have the devices of 2019 available in few places.
Obviously 5 mark I is better than 10 ii. Like 5ii is better than 10iii.

If Lg had followed same steps from Sony and making less devices per year and exited markets they barely sell, they would still be around.

There is no need to have 10, 16, 25, 33 different phones per year.
They start to overlap each other.
                      Waste of R&D.

Motorola had much better phones when they had E, G and X only.

Sony Alpha MILC have made tremendous progress in the stand alone camera industry when Nikon and Canon have been playing catch up to Sony technology. It's exciting to see Sony taking a serious look at their mobile photography. Only good things will come about for mobile photography as a whole.

This video only explains how Sony sticks to the traditional way of photography, and that is something similar to their Alpha cameras.
In short, much like with Alpha cameras, the best way to make out the best of the Xperia cameras is by maximizing its manual controls in the Pro apps. There are simply no major computational photography involved here.

From this statement alone, it should already be recognized by everyone that the camera performance of these Xperias shouldn't even be compared to any other smartphone that makes use of software enhancements to produce better images.
There's a reason why Sony claims their phones are more for "professionals."
Any real photographer that uses any digital camera, especially Alpha mirrorless cams, will understand the concept behind this and certainly will appreciate Sony's implementation of such experience on a smartphone.

Whether this is something that suits you or not is entirely up to your preference, but it's totally unfair to say that this is an inferior approach just because it didn't fit your needs properly.
It's just a matter of choosing which one suits you best. It's not gonna affect your life if Sony creates a phone that's not targeted to you and is not being forced to you to purchase.
This is just similar to gaming phones, where there's always a unique target audience for those type of phones.
In other words, just get what you want and get over it. There's no need to be hating on anything, as these companies are just doing nothing but to deliver fantastic experiences with their products. Besides, more options is always better, and if Sony ever leaves the market, there's certainly going to be quite a large population in the society that would be disappointed because of it.

                                Just different approach.

All other use HDR as default. Sony does not (HDR cant be used for all situations).
At night , few brands set night mode as default, other raise ISO, Sony uses low iso + slow shutter (photos end up bit darker).

When even Phone Arena feels enchanted by results, you can trust .
Because they are ones that bash the most.

Instead of wasting time with this explanation, useless of course, they should work on how to bring these phones quicker to the market at a reasonable price.
They should diversify their offers to catch more clients, they should work on a better software etc

I like their approach, but will still wait for GSMArena review. If the cameras are improved from last year models, then they did deliver on their promises and made progress. If not, well, better luck on their next iteration.

If anything, I think they have the right hardware right there, maybe only software mght be lacking a little bit, but alas, I havent tinkered around with a Xperia
