Anonymous, 20 Apr 2021Signal to noise ratio, speed everything is better on larger... moreCheaping out?
Exmor costs much more than Isocell.
Samsung has decided to charge 40% more in 2021 for the sensors and they still are cheaper than exmor.
Be sure that 1 year old imx557 costs more than 689, 700y and GN2.
It is gen6, 689 and 700y are not.
They are just larger, not more advanced.
By the way, raw shows what cmos can do.
Not jpeg.

Anonymous, 19 Apr 2021OMG, all this time they were lying.
I should have believe... moreReminds me of a camera/video comparison of two phones back in the day where the one showing brighter/more saturated colors was better over the other with photos showing natural color.
They did not say Photoshop can saturate the dull, normal colored photos but not normalize the vivid one.

Anonymous, 20 Apr 2021And to keep their phones from cannibalising their DSLR sale... moreSony does not make DSLR, just compact and mirrorless.
Cellphones cant come close to their compacts.
The 1" ZV1 humiliates any phone.
It has nothing to do with camera sales.

Having bigger sensors on phones has both pros and cons, Sony engineers knows that and prefer the smaller sensors based on speed, wider depth of field and signal to noise ratio.
You would know that Huawei has a Huge camera but it's DoF is so thin.

I know it's interesting and exciting, all the technical terms, all of the optics, listening to those people but they have to focus on one thing: the consumer. The consumer wants to take a picture with their phone and look amazing, with beautiful colors, awesome dynamic range, stunning white balance, no artifacts, no color fringing etc all that technical talk doesn't mean much if they don't deliver to the consumer. Focus Sony, you have the obligation to have some of the best smartphone photography!

But it does not work as default.
It works when the BACKLIT icon shows up on screen as one of the scene recognition.

TooFatTooFurious, 19 Apr 2021It explains why they are so overpriced, but doesn't ex... moregoes to show how little you know about cameras. 1/1.7 is a huge sensor. Just for comparison, Lumia 1020 used a 1/1.5 sensor with 41 mp resolution.
Sony is using 12MP because at lower res, you can have faster readouts which are useful for slow motion and that AF tracking thing. The pixel size is huge, too, with 1.8u on that sensor. Bigger pixels means more light can be captured.
If anything, I feel they are missing out on Stack processing and HDR thing, since Alpha team has no need to use that on proper cameras, but on cellphone devices, those two actually help gather more image info. Either way, they will probably figure it out. An IMX400 succesor would be quite an achievement for Xperia on these moments
