I have seen in a YouTube video of a Russian guy testing out the cameras of this phone, and I saw that it was having auto HDR in Basic Mode.
Perhaps this is the reason why those shots look good in terms of exposure and color science, and they could be taken in this mode as well.

CompactPhones5ever, 09 May 2021Tell me Sony fanboys, how exactly is GSMA hating on Sony? T... moreIf you want me to be honest at least (will not name-call you or anything and this is coming from a guy who is not a fanboy of any brand), it's the 'eye-watering price part' that made me scoff.
Galaxy S21 Ultra started at $1300 in Europe and GSMArena didn't bat an eye (that had a measley 128GB of non-expandable storage). Sony gives you MicroSD card slot, headphone jack, front-facing stereo speakers, double that storage, faster charging, dual optical periscope lens, and a 4K@120Hz (and I didn't include a solid amount of software cues like stamina mode) and all of a sudden, THAT $1300 is 'eye-watering'.
That's where I saw the opinionated hate.

And just for the record I respect Sony, they are one of the few companies who are still giving a chance for compact phone, but Sony fanboys are an equivalent of Apple fanboys, just for android. Sony could literally send a dog poop on a canvas instead of these samples and fanboys would still praise it for its incredible color accuracy and outstanding contrast.

The fact that they are not drooling over these fairly averages samples like the ""leaker"" did does not count as hating, sorry to break it to you fanboys.

Tann Hauser, 09 May 2021Everything intended by the photographer is in focus. No they are not. The neon signs are out of focus on the first two indoor telephoto shots. Orange cars also are out of focus on both 3x and 4.6x shots which you can see from the fact that the outline of the car's door knob is blurred. The photo of the buildings is obviously not worth having a discussion about. Though I must admit though that the last one is a bit hard to judge since the subject is covered in very coarse luminance and sharpening noise.
So out of 8 samples 5 of them clearly missed the focus - and that's not really a good sign.

Anonymous, 09 May 2021Because if Sony's phones were as great as their fanboi... moreOk, so why does that affect YOU? XBox and PS4 were trailing behind the Nintendo Switch on sales. Does that make the Switch the better system than PS4/XBox One? The long answer is that it's subjective to the user's experience. Sales should not reflect a person's decision on what they want. You either like it or you don't. End of story.

OMG, horrible processing seems to be still there from the old times. I thought Sony would have got rid of that by now. Zooming in reminds me of my Xperia Z5. UGH!
Dynamic range and colour rendition seems to be great as usual instead

Considering just flagships: Apple, Google, Samsung, Huawe... moreUgh stop this already, you're making stuffs up out of nowhere, again.
The only phones that use always-on HDR are Pixels, iPhones since XS, and Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra. The rest that you mentioned all use auto HDR where the HDR is activated depending on the proportion of the blown out highlights/crushed shadows within the frame, and Xperia has been one of them since forever. Not just for midrange series, but for flagship Xperia series as well.
"Photo Pro disables burst when person turns on HDR"
Do you even know that Xperia 1 III activates multi-frame noise reduction IN 20fps BURST SHOOTING MODE when there isn't sufficient amount of light in the surrounding environment? This argument, that burst photography cannot coexist with computational photography achieved through stacking, is already outdated.
"If phone had weak DR, turning on HDR would not change anything. But it does"
What?

The main camera produces some nice colour and good amount of details, though the sharpening is a bit harsher than I would like it to be.. On the other hand, the telephoto shots are pretty awful in every single way apart from colours and dynamic range - lots of oversharpening, terrible focusing and generally no fine details whatsoever.
Frankly speaking I'm disappointed, as in terms of the hardware this dual focal length telephoto camera should come very close to the top in terms of pure light collecting ability. Hopefully Sony will fix it by the time this phone will be released internationally and won't disappoint us again.

Having the same main camera on my 5II here, and yes, making myself same quality lowlight photos.
Its probably just not the automode tho, but an MR setup in PhotoPro. If it was on auto, shots would ve probably be much brighter, nightmode-ish.
But this is exactly what I expect from camera lowlights, great detail with great color reproduction and no overexcessive brightening up of a night scene.

Very dissapointing picture quality taken at night. If you look at food picture you may no see clarity, too much blur. My first and last Sony phone was Xperia Z2 Premium. Only with monochrome scheme it was possible to shoot good pictures. But here is the only promotion about Alpha series that doesn`t contribute anything when talking about real quality of pictures. It will take time for Sony to produce competitive cameras and right algorithms to present precision quality of photos taken on their smartphones.

Mark III series shaping up to be top phones of the year.
My 5II cameras do an amazing job too, but this is even better.
