The optics and hardware seem great, but Sony needs to work on the Computational Photography Algorithms. It needs better HDR, and the Night Mode needs better flare control. It shouldn't be too difficult, if the majority of flagships have been able to pull it off well.

2) phones are not assembled before announcement to avoid leaks.
3) xperia does not have own factories, making TVs and PS as fast as possible is more important to them.

Considering just flagships: Apple, Google, Samsung, Huawei, BBK, Xiaomi and Motorola all use HDR by default.
Phones that do not use HDR as default, gsmarena team turns it on to compared to auto mode.
Auto mode choose Landscape almost all the time in daylight.
Rarely chooses the Backlit.
Considering you have had xperia before, you know how often Landscape is chosen over other scenes.
Why do you think 10iii gets auto HDR but 1iii and 5iii do not?
Eye AF, the burst with AF etc .. Photo Pro disables burst when person turns on HDR.
10 series has Night Mode, while flagships have 30s shutter.
If phone had weak DR, turning on HDR would not change anything.
But it does.
There is no software issue. Just different appoach.
While other focus on single photo + static subject , sony tries to cover as many situations as possible. The other brands do not even bother to offer AF while doing burst.

About HDR, how about no? DR on A9 is superb because of way way better hardware, other flagship phone are using JPEG processing in order to compensate it (there are the good one, there are the bad one), while Xperia act like a bigger camera where hardware limitation is there.

I dont know...looks like out of focus a bit on the subjects (shaky hands), love the natural image processing, highlights still clipped here & there (interior samples looks good).
Will be waiting a proper retail unit review.

Diamon, 08 May 2021old but gold Nokia 950XL beats today flagship cameras.No, it doesn't exactly beat them, but still I'd like gsma team to have a look at 950XL again, maybe not a counter-clockwise article, but maybe a retro-look of sorts to see how well it holds up.
And pls also use the awesome tools like the Dynamic Flash & Rich HDR since it lacks any auto-HDR iirc. I've been impressed (after looking at AAWP's articles) by how well it holds up (& sometimes beats) against today's phones, especially when it comes to the natural look & laid back processing of Lumia.

Apart from the last picture where the little girl is walking the dog, or the dog walking the little girl 😂, I like them.
However I'm no expert so I'll leave that to GSMArena when the retail model drops.
