Kuo: iPhones will switch to Apple's own 5G modems in 2023 "at the earliest"

10 May 2021
Apple acquired Intel's modem division in 2019 and invested €1 billion in an R&D facility in Germany to develop its own 5G tech.

Anonymous, 11 May 2021Android runs on linux and so does most of the world's ... moreLinux users keep comforting themselves with that. How many servers run by professional IT personnel have Linux installed is irrelevant info, so is the fact Android is based on Unix. Android is whole separate ecosystem that has zero resemblence with desktop Linux. Comparing apples to oranges is meaningless. Linux on desktops, while usable is a very niche thing because it's just too fiddly even for most basic use. There will always be something that doesn't work and solutions always include typing 3 kilometers long noodles into Console. Casual users rather follow a 2 pages long guide instructing them what to click in settings than deal with terminals or consoles. Also, have you ever installed driver in Linux? On Windows, that's a matter of double clicking a package. On Linux, it's here we go again Console. It's especially fun when WLAN driver instructs you to use ONLINE driver repository...

5G is just a gimmick nowadays. I have recently bought a 5G phone (not for this purpose), and I have more like 4G+ speeds (even though my phone shows 5G connection in the top right corner). And I live in Central Europe, in a medium size city (about 400,000 people).

What??! By that time most of the competition would already have moved to 6G or 7G.

Whatever about thousands of people complaining about problems with 5g battery drain and it not deliver ungroomed true 5g speeds. Another batterygate in the making.

It's hard to make a profit just selling modems. Well, I'm not surprised that this is coming from an iPhone user. There's a easy mode in the settings in galaxy phones for people like you🤣🤣🤣

It has no inherent costs by licensing or buying from 3rd parties who make them, but research and development and designing of chipsets costs a lot. Don't expect any change in costs as far as end users go, but you can expect much better operation, which in modem's terms means lower power consumption, potentially better reception and better speeds.

Since they can use in-house modems, it should lower the price of the devices, right?

wait then what 5G modem are they using right now? X55? Balong 5000?

Like xiaomi make a tws because copying apple.

But now Apple will copy huawei, because Huawei always made 5G modems.
