polycarbonate is much cheaper than gorilla glass.
Its also has better properties applicable to its usage, i.e. in an expensive device thats thrown into bags, held in hands, kept in pockets and is always at risk of hitting the ground hard.
The fact they managed to make it look and feel solid is a bonus and a credit to them.

I remember when people said glass is the new premium then
Anyone that defend this plastic approach on a 1000$ is a fanboy

A good quality plastic is better, especially for wireless communications. And feels better.

I really wanted an S21 because of the plastic housing ... Unfortunately I had to swap it for the S21+ because of the S21's too small display.

because in this pandemic each seat has a distance to another seat, sitting in the back row is awful.

Superzoom is useful for some people who need it in their activities.

I always use cases on my phones. And when I have Samsung or Apple phones, even the more specialised ones (like leather type or with nice thematic).
You can't even tell the colour of the phone. I don't care if it's plastic or glass, because I don't even touch or look at that phone surface.
I can't even remember when I saw the last time a person that carry a phone without case. Especially if they have newer models.
So, all this complaining is for nothing. People should complain about practical stuff in smartphones (like lack of micro sd cards and headphone jack), not design stuff. Design is relative.

Why are they spending so much on plastic to make it feel like glass, rather than just getting actual glass? Gorilla Glass 3 is probably cheaper than that kind of glorified plastic or "glasstic" as they call it.

We're talking about the FRAME or CHASSIS, not about the back panel! As in the thing that is holding all the hardware parts together. As in the actual part of the phone that takes the damage when you drop the phone. A plastic FRAME will break, well, like plastic!
Do you get it now or do you need a drawing?
                              Again, FRAME, not back panel!

AnonD-1003038, 15 Jun 2021You're paying 800€ for the phone, not 250€. No, I don&... moreWon't shatter, isn't slippery so plastic is more durable overall. I understand why you might think glass feels more premium but most people use their phones with a case no matter what you say. Plastic isn't bad even on flagships..

                                  So much whining over nothing!
Caseback material: I've had glass, I've had plastic & now polycarbonate "glastic" and this new glastic is the best ive used. Can take a drop or a knock without an issue, feels premium, looks premium, doesnt attract fingerprints.
Glass is pretty but the aim, at lest to me is to reduce the amount of delicate materials used in a device that is carried around and likely to be dropped.
Besides, glass/plastic/glastic, its all covered in a case that never looks half as good as the phone anyway!

Chipset: I had an S7 for 5 years and only got rid of it as it was no longer updated. if samsung kept updating it i would have held onto it. it was still quite fast, took good photos, had a beautiful screen, was a nice size and did pretty much everything my new phone (S20 FE) does. Most people dont need a new chipset each year, and certainly dont need the latest and greatest.

Camera: people go nuts over cameras but how many actually print anything off vs just look at it on the tiny screen on the phone?
At this level, most of the differences lie in the in-phone processing so just view samples from a bunch of current phones and buy the one that looks best to you.
I bought the S20FE as the images look great to my eye, it takes reasonable images in low light and is quick. I would have been just as happy with a pixel 4a/5 judging by a play around with one.

This arguing all boils down to most people having an inability to be happy. happiness is an optimization problem. "i have this phone and im happy, but if i had that newer phone with a new chipset i wont even notice, ill be 0.653% happier.

Get a phone, dont worry about it too much, live your life and actually be happy!

                                        This is funny.
Its llike Samsung following apple trend to get rid of everything costly but will keep the expensive price to make a difference between manufacturing and vendor price as big as possible.
