YUKI93, 11 Jul 2021I definitely love the HDMI external monitor capability, but... moreIt can be used with Panasonic, Fuji, Canon, Nikon etc.
Not only sony cameras.

Dometalican, 11 Jul 2021"It's a shame, because for $2,500 we'd expec... moreXperia 1 III has worse display than Xperia 1 II, so I believe most of the creators appreciate less dim screen to work with.

Dometalican, 11 Jul 2021"It's a shame, because for $2,500 we'd expec... moreEven though they started with Sony claiming it to be a 5G tool, rather than a phone, they still went after the "spec race" of typical smartphones. Sigh.

"It's a shame, because for $2,500 we'd expect the Xperia 1 III as a blueprint, complete with a Snapdragon 888, a bigger 4,500mAh battery and the more complex triple camera with a variable-focal length 3x-4.4x 70mm-105mm telephoto camera."

Ivan, the phone was announced LAST YEAR. Just because Europe got it recently doesn't mean Sony can just magically pull it with the 1 III specs. That's not how certifications for these phones work. Come on dude. Show your non-bias a little better.

Hands on that looks like half hearted review.

The main question here is will any "Pro creator" pick Sony Xperia Pro as their external display/5G hotspot?
My guess is not really, as the screen is extremely bad outside, it's super small due to 21:9, it's pricey and seriously, you do not need 4K display for this type of work.

This shows the way Sony is designing their phones these days. I remembered the time when CEO stated, Sony will not compete with the current market and would wait for a Paradigm Shift... Not all products are for consumers to use. Some of them give or builds the identity of a brand on which the future audiences would be served. And it looks like, Sony wants to build the image of Xperia's as an "elite" product. And that is where the Xperia Pro comes in.

Red one, all over again. Both with outdated hardware, extremely high price and only 1 feature over the iii model.

But again, some naive people will buy it. Just like the apple ones.

This equipment is only for stadium reporters, and for some locations with 5G network, street reporters. In COVID situations some videographers find it useful for online wedding streaming. Made for 2020 games. Yes there are much better dedicated PRO streamers, 5G broadcast rooters, ... but try to run with it around the stadium for good scene. For reporters weight and instant is everything, quality need to be just OK, and the only reel quality they need is Steady Shot. And it is also can be used as a phone, when you are not working.

mixedfish, 11 Jul 2021"we'd wager those people are using ever more spec... morePeople, who paid large sum of money for a top piece of equipment don't switch just like that, or just because "hey, it's Sony".
For casual users this is way too expensive, for high level professionals too limited.

"we'd wager those people are using ever more specialized equipment like a professional Streamer & Recorder, an encoder, a switcher, etc"

This is the exact same comment when Sony released the A7. Everyone using Canon/Nikon were saying no pros would not switch because it didn't allow all the existing features and no one cared about a compact all in one.

Just watch and learn, people will switch to all in one device that's cheaper and lighter. I can already think of streaming scenarios like live drone footage where weight is necessary and multi directional antenna are required.

It's a half hearted concept. I've done video work, and this is way.behind. But, firstly, you can buy a blackmagic design video recorder monitor of suitable quality for a lot less than the quoted price. But by the time you buy that, you might have bought a much better black magic design pocket cinema camera 4k for much less, even the 6k pockets. Basically, you are paying over $3000, with recorder monitor, for something a $200 action camera could be designed to do )the only real issue there, is they normally don't allow manual lens zoom etc, except for that $3 feature, and 4:2:2 filming,, it's basically getting comparable to a $200 action camera.

8 bit I'd yesteryear. Even back then, pro was 10-12 bits, and now the national broadcaster in Japan, who research and set the way Forward, is preparing 16 bits from memory Due to localised adaption of the eyes dynamic range, a future wall TV could reveal much stepping at 8 to 10 bits. If you think it is a joke, just remember the issues people had with levels and blocking being visible in dark areas on oled's. That's a walk in the park compared to the more generalised problem here. So, in the HDR areA, acquisition should be at least 12 bits. But in professional circles, you over shoot the delivery spec, so an extra 2 bits on top of that again would be helpful in post.

Datarate, datarate, datarate. Extra datarate makes for a better picture, and fur you to post princess a better picture in post. As with pixel bit depth, you over shoot. While I could say you should shoot at double the datarate which gives you the quality you want to deliver at, in reality, real pro's want to hit visually lossless at least. Visually lossless is where the lossless in the video compression is not really noticable, visually. Visually lossless tends be ve half or quarter the datarate if true lossless, but lower professionals will use something approximately 144mb/s for 4k in h264, and much more or less depending on how good your video compression codec is to h264's quality at a given compression rate. So, up to around 300mb/s is used in prosumer camcorders, at 4k, but half as much or so, in h265 quality, and 600mb/s+ in a inter codec (better quality). A high grade professional would look at something double those datarates.

Like other things, high end professionals prefer to shoot under or over the resolution, to hide aliasing issues with the single chip sensor, or get better detail in the delivery format. 8k 4:2:2 12 but 50fps, would be helpful.

Let's see, no full manual controls on this phone.

They could use a version of TB/USB4/Mhl to deliver the HDMI function at maximum resolution and framerate, then use an adaptor cable. Little versions of HDMI are fidgety and get bumped or fall out. Better a low profile bent USB plug with the HDMI cable inserted and screwed into the other end

So, no, not good pro equipment. You might get a nice over priced monitor out of it. It needs to v $500 for current spec. You could send big bucks on Sony actual pro equipment, or look at BMD pocket cinema cameras.

4:2:2 is a pro feature, but at this stage 4:4:4 would be better.

                                Full-Hearted priced obviously
                                love the design tough

I definitely love the HDMI external monitor capability, but I do wish that it would work on a non-Sony DSLR and Mirrorless cameras.

this one is a tool as it said, but why in a phone? to make big price income for sony? old processor and others are below from competitor except just that micro hdmi, vapor chamber, and 5G stream.

And now in come the Sony knights to say how gsm just doesn't understand the target consumer for this phone. And how its so much better than any other phone out there.
