Google will stop updating Play Services for devices running Android Jelly Bean

09 July 2021
There will be a last update at the end of August and nothing after that. Jelly Bean (v4.1-4.3) accounts for less than 1% of Android devices today.

FWIW, I couldn't care less. With the presence of trustworthy third-party app stores (like APK Pure), you don't even need Google Play. Why, therefore, should I downgrade my experience just because ABC no longer supports the last user-friendly version of Android? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Really disappointed in Google dropping support for JB. Yes my device is 9 years old but is more than sufficient for my uses. I try as much as possible to engage in the circular economy, limit buying cheap items only to throw them away a year later & replace it with another cheap item. I guess Google are not interested in supporting the environment & doing what it can to limit climate change. #DontLookUp

Stop crying it's not like anything really changes for you that matters. Your device is still widly out of date and is severely outclassed by phones even homeless ppl in the USA use.

Plus its very hard to optimize and work on older versions. U can buy a 100 bucks phone which is better than ur previous phone. There are some cheaper 4g button ppl phone which have google YouTube but not play store or u could get some other midranger. I don't think plagship is necessary for ur phone to last long

For example, I'm now typing this comment from a 7 year old Android KitKat device. I don't want the 1 billion apps on the Play Store but just a browser, YouTube, some Google services like discover and maps, and some tiny tools like APK extractor and Shortcut Maker. I want those to be up to date. So it is useful to update those apps, and they could also add lite versions for older devices. Also 1% usage are tens of thousands of people. So it makes sense.

                    R. I. P. Android Jelly Bean... You will never be forgotten, and hey google, I have a Jelly Bean device, why stop support? 1% are thousands of people! Tell me that Play Store will be able to update a bit more than just August!

[deleted post]iOS can only dream about being as advanced as Android.
lol it took them 10 years to deliver basic widgets and app drawer all of which are still half baked and full of bugs.
Even budget devices are embarrassing iOS in terms of software features and ease of use.
3rd party apps are crashing more on iOS than Android. I wonder why? Maybe coz Android is simply more optimized than iOS.
All the Optimization PR campaign from Apple has been badly exposed in the real world.
Handicapped ecosystem of iOS will never be as polished as Android.
                          Keep dreaming!

Mkbhd also pointed out huge shortcomings on iOS 15 that are present on Android so easily on even budget device. They don't call it LieOS for no reason. Apple lies about easy experience. It's what a half baked beta product looks like.
Android on the other hand has delivered what people wanted and established its authority over the smartphone market.

It's not like GooglePlay is any better, but at least it's not that bad. Very few vendors offer APK's on their actual own site.
