Apple patents periscope lens design for its iPhones with two prisms, LG and Corning working on liquid lenses

13 July 2021
A two prism design is unusual. A liquid lens might also find its way into a periscope and into an iPhone.

[deleted post]I have been and so will continue to enjoy it thanks.

LieOS eh, you steal that or did it take you this long to think it up?

And I couldn’t give less of flying f*ck what 1.3 billion other people choose, I decide for myself. My only hope is that unlike you, they have better things to do with their time than prattle on endlessly about it.

I have the right to leave the iOS eco system whoever I choose should any of the trivial cr*p you just mentioned start to matter to me.

And seeing as how I have a sizeable investment in apps and media on the play store waiting for me should I decide to do that, it won’t be much on an issue .

DaFink, 14 Jul 2021For that analogy to be anything other than sheer stupidity,... moreWhere is your right to buy a phone that supports more than 20W fast charging in the ios ecosystem?
Where is your right or choice to buy a phone that supports standard type C? or get any of the various other features thar are absent on ios?

[deleted post]For that analogy to be anything other than sheer stupidity, it would have to be that I am somehow denied my consumer rights to choose to purchase whatever I please, whenever I please.

As this is not the case, it’s right back to being sheer stupidity….

Because of this war, we get latest tech early as opposed to 5-10 years late like on iPhone.
Because of this war, people have great choice in Android world, unlike zero choice inside the pri$on called iOS. iOS users have to pay 1000$ for outdated hardware and software. Nothing is more lower tier than paying good money and getting ancient hardware and software.

AnonD-1003038, 14 Jul 2021Gotta love it when you people pick and choose all the best ... moreWell said, people keep speaking about Android in monolithic terms, but that is not how it is.
Even what runs on pixels cannot really be considered 'pure' android, but is more Google's own take on things.

Things are even more segregated at the hardware level, and far from being this unified front versus the evil Apple hord, the various Android vendors are predominantly at war with each other.

Anonymous, 13 Jul 2021Bayer has no issues. Otherwise would not be the most used. ... moreI've already called you out on this hundreds of time before, but let me make this once again: Plastic lenses are much easier to design and those tiny phone camera lenses often have a 40MP+ equivalent of resolving capability as proven by phones like the regular Galaxy S21 and Mate X2.
                              https://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=1&idCamera1=30003&idCamera2=300744&idCamera3=300781
Glass lenses have higher optical transparency as well as refractive index therefore used more readily on interchangeable lenses where the increase in cost by using glass as a material wouldn't be a huge concern (though sometimes aspheric elements are still made of plastic). But plastic lenses can only resolve 5MP? Quit lying so blatantly, mate.

                              "google loves to do it"
Google is more lenient than the most when it comes to JPEG sharpening.

TheLastOracle, 13 Jul 2021Apple marketing will call this 're-inventing the wheel... moreWell, that's because Bayer Filter is the most practical one. Complementary CFAs such as CYGM filter suffer from serious colour artifacts, RGBW filter absorbs more light per exposure but raises chroma noise level in the image (though white pixels can be used for chroma denoising), RYYB somewhat worked well in JPEG after years of Huawei's colour processing tuning but is still hardly useful for RAW, and finally Foveon sensors have an awful light sensitivity which makes them truly usable only at ISO lower than 800.

Good super resolution stacking algorithms could effectively circumvent the limitations of the Bayer patterns - eliminate false colour artifacts and increase the resolution of the image significantly without any serious drawback, and this would be much easier to achieve compared to developing whole new algorithms that actually work well for different types of colour filters.

apple - backwards as usual. this periscope tech has been used in consumer products since 20 years ago by the japanese camera manufacturers. Android smartphone makers has been doing this since many years back.... NOW finally, apple wants to "study" how to put it into their products. OMG, Mr steve jobs we need you back from the grave to lead Apple again!!! Apple is nothing without you!

AnonD-936656, 14 Jul 2021Remember the dark mode on IOS? Every android had it 2 years... moreGotta love it when you people pick and choose all the best features from all the various Android smartphone vendors and call it "Android feature" like it's been available on 100% of Android devices of ALL vendors and put that against iOS made by one single company. You either compare iOS with Google's stock ROM or you don't because only that translates features actually being universaly available on phones of all vendors. Or be honest about it and really compare OneUI with iOS or OxygenOS with iOS or MIUI with iOS, not just "Android". But why do I even bother when I'll only be met by floods of salt and hatred for stating something logical on this site...

Only Apple could patent a wrinkle on something invented by another company that offers less than (in this case zoom) the original design.
