heist , 19 Aug 2021Sony set trend While that is true for modern smartphones of today, Sony's periscope camera only locks at two different focal length. Maybe Oppo will offer variable focal length from that periscope lens. But tbh, this whole idea is not new since ASUS has already done it with the Zenfone Zoom all the way back in 2015.

I liked them for new tech implementations, unlike Honor.

It is possible that Apple is already using different RGBW sensors.
-There was a rumor that the iPhone 6s uses an RGBW sensor.
-when the iPhone X was released, Apple said that the sensor captures 83% more light, but the sensor area and f-number were identical.
-Apple uses different camera sensors than other manufacturers: For example the iPhone 12 Pro Max sensor has a pixel size of 1.7 micrometer. The iPhone Xs used a very common sensor size (24mm²), but without dual pixel autofocus although every competitor with a 24mm² sensor had dual pixel autofocus

RGBW sounds like it will have crazy color noise due to only half the color data, but good luma detail. The extra detail may be good for 2x crop i guess. But not sure if the loss of color information makes it worth. Color/chroma noise is much more annoying and unpleasant than luma noise, so denosing will kill a lot of detail

Looks like Samsung is gonna bet on same system used by 21U for 22U.
0.5, 1.0, 4.0 and 10.
Probably change the 10MP 1/3.2" for a 12MP 1/2.9".

Brands just fool people, like when they call fixed focal length as optical zoom. Even worse when this marketing comes from Samsung and Sony (former and current 📷 makers).

This is why phones have multicam setup instead of single camera with optical zoom.
Largest sensor used so far for periscope is 1/2".
Both are fixed and less than 130mm.
Impossible inside phone to use same sensor of main camera, while having for example 15-250mm.

Sony managed 2-step zoom, oppo is taking one step further and working on variable zoom.maybe in 3 years, variable zooms will be standard in flagships. In addition, using lossless variable digital zoom is the best way upto 3x like on s21.

Depends on how many values they decide to offer.
Limited space is huge factor for periscope tech.
We do not know if it is gonna work every 5, 10 , 12 , 20 or 40mm.
My cybershot works every 2,5mm.
But is way easier to make this with regular camera.
