Finally! I have had this issue on 3 different redmis. First was on my note 3 pro, then on my note 5 and now on my current redmi note 8. On the 3 and 5, it happened when they were over 2 years old hence I assumed it was an aging process. Honestly, it's annoying. Every time I upgrade hoping it won't happen again, but it seems I am incredibly unlucky in this regard. On my current phone, I have turned off pocket mode, since with this on, every time I wake the phone up I need to press the volume down to make that "dont cover the top area" error message go away.
Whenever I receive or make a call, the screen goes dark and won't come on until the call is ended. This means I have to wait for the other party to end the call, if they don't, well I must restart the phone by long-pressing the power button until it restarts. I have been to redmi service station and they couldn't help since the warranty period was past, and not even the service technician knew what or where the problem was.
A workaround I have for the calling issue is always ensuring that I have a pair of wired or wireless earphones. However, there are times when I don't have them around I'm reminded of the problem. It's really annoying since the phone is just over a year old. I was hoping to use it for 3 yrs but that is highly unlikely, I don't think my patience will make it that far. If the OTA they are talking about doesn't fix the issue, which I doubt it will since I am convinced this is a hardware issue having seen it in 2 other phones, and seen owners of even higher-end models in the Xiaomi line up on online forums, then it might be time to try another brand even though I'm a big Xiaomi fan.
Hey Xiaomi, if you can't recalibrate the sensor with the OTA, at least turn it off completely, or give us this option. I would rather my screen never goes off and let me deal with the unintentional touches from my ear or cheek rather than the whole blackout screen I experience.
Anyone with the same issue and maybe a fix that works? a tip would be appreciated.

Maybe somebody else isn't and they are equally entitled to their opinion. There are people complaining about stuff for every brand on this site as there are people praising everything about every brand. There is always a simple solution. Just stick to the published articles and don't read comments on these forums if you are sick and tired of reading it. Agree with you though on the pros of Xiaomi devices outweighing the cons at least for their Redmi midrangers and budget devices

I am sick and tired of hearing that MIUI is rubbish, it's full of bugs, the Proximity sensor doesn't work etc.

We'll all I can say is all that is definitely not my experience.
I have never had a Xiaomi phone until I took a punt on a deal on a Note 10 pro when it was released. I've always had HTC and Samsung's before.

All I can say is I haven't regretted it one bit. What an astonishing device for the money. MIUI is a superb OS that works very well, no bugs I have come across yet or worthy of being noticed.
My Proximity sensor works 100%, so how much of this is user error, unsuitable cases etc.

Also the one thing that REALLY annoys me about all this Proximity sensor complaining is that it's easily circumvented
SIMPLY PRESS THE POWER BUTTON IN A CALL TO TURN THE SCREEN OFF!
Is that really that hard to do?

Lastly I have been an XDA developerl for many years and developed for Samsung devices for years, they are NOT bug free and the community has had to correct many issues themselves yet we pay way higher prices for those bugs.

Mobile phones of today are extremely technical and difficult devices to build. It's takes huge feats of engineering to provide what we have today.
Be thankful a manufacturer like Xiaomi gives us this at a very respectable cost.

Xiaomi do not deserve half of the negativity thrown at them by these so called haters as the positives they provide seriously outweigh a couple of bugs here and there.
They have acknowledged the issue now let them try and fix it or dig deep into your coffers and go and spend 3 times as much on a Samsung flagship then you can have a moan about some new issues and how you've spent a fortune on a flagship device and expect better lol

Thats because THERE IS NO PROXIMITY sensor on these damn phones. They use some sort of stupid sound sensors acting as proximity sensors.

You can google about this and find more about it. Its some stupid cost cutting measure and there is no way to disable these useless fake sensor.

My 10t pro global works fine most of the time, but in some cases don't know why phone screen does not turn off at all. I had few accidental touches already and the call suddenly ended. At first i thought signal dropped, but then i see the screen light still on during some other calls, and i realize the drop might caused from my cheek touching the end button. Maybe due to lack of space at front screen that xiaomi came to this virtual/software solution. It is not a critical error, but sure is very annoying one.

What I cannot forgive is them knowing about the issue apparently for some time and not addressing it - and continuing to use the same system for newer phones even after they knew there was an issue with the older phones.

                      This is negligent and dishonest.

I could accept it affecting one model of phone, and them recognizing the issue and accepting responsibility and making sure that every following phone used a different system (that works) - but they apparently decided to gaslight their users into thinking that it was their fault and just kept using the same proximity detection for the newer phones that followed, instead of fixing it after the first time it was reported.

True that can be done better or calibrated to a higher range, but in general is our fault.

But not on my previous Xiaomi phone, K20 Pro, note 10 pro, note 8, and Max 3.

Maybe I got a bad batch of Mi 10T pro?

I think this problem is with their recent launches like the poco f3. I've owned Redmi note 3, Redmi note 5, and the Redmi note 7 pro which are still working fine except for the Redmi note 3. Now I'm using poco f3 and it have this proximity sensor issue, either the screen just went black when on call or it won't turn off automatically, very annoying, I hope Xiaomi fix this soon.

They need to look at their music app. Over the years users complaining of the same thing, that it doesn't play their albums in the default playback order, i.e. by track number. Instead it plays by alphabetical order of songname. Despite many updates Xiaomi applies on the music app still they don't fix the issue, forcing users to have to download a different app.
