They make phones in batches , maybe that is the reason why not each and every user have this proximity issue.
As a practice, I always buy a new phone , after waiting for sometime and not on flash sales.
What others can do is wait a few months, or buy a few months used phone from Trusted shop or seller where you can test before buying, so you know it is not impacted.
Both strategy worked with me , I never got a bad Xiamomi or Poco till now

After using my Mi Note 2 for about 3 years I moved to Redmi Note 10 Pro. The most annoying problem in my new phone was the Proximity Sensor. I made some research I came to this conclusion:
To save some money Xiaomi changed the optical proximity sensor to a cheap ultrasonic sensor or even completely removed it and replaced with a AI proximity algorithm (like in Mi 11).
It's impossible to fix it. They can say what they want but even an amazing algorithm won't fix this problem because it doesn't have enough data.

"But in case this is a widespread hardware issue, as some suspect, this might not be the solution some users were hoping for."
That is so on point. No amount of software update can fix a hardware issue. That part HAS to be replaced for real!

I don't think Elliptic Labs have the proximity sensors for Poco-series, and probably not the Redmi K-series.
Elliptic Labs have delivered the virtual sensors for Mi-series, Redmi Note-series, Black Shark 4 and the latest Redmi gaming-model.
Probably the MiMix4 too, but I am not sure on that one.
If there are problems with both Poco an Mi10 there is a problem not just related to Elliptic Labs,? What kind of sensors do the Poco use?

I put it up to my ear hit all kids of buttons or hang up on the person. I'll be Stinking with the Z fold 2 and 3, flip 3, S21 Ultra and iPhone 12 pro max line up. This thing sucks, it's for sale if anyone wants it.

Anonymous, 22 Aug 2021Absolute rubbish you speak I've had flagships from Chi... moreThe amount of hatred Chinese flagships get on this site is astonishing!!!
Even after a decade later, with three out of the top 5 smartphone companies in the world being Chinese, these guys still continue to repeat age old stereotypes about Chinese brands.
Both me and my wife have upgraded to Xiaomi phones.
She has always used iPhones or Samsung Galaxy phones in the past and I have used Samsung flagships mostly.
I have yet to see anything that makes flagship Xiaomi phones any less in quality compared to Samsung Galaxy series (the previous Kings).
The only conclusion I came to was that Samsung was way overpriced compared to what it offered.

Using an ultrasonic software solution as a proximity sensor is bound to be problematic when used with third party phone cases. Each will have different acustic characteristics which will effect the performance IMHO.
Try maybe removing the case as an experiment and see if there is still an issue.

Phones fan, 22 Aug 2021From my experience with Xiaomi, they will fix the bug, but ... moreActually that's Apple that rolls out beta updates as stable. With every new update, they roll out tons of bugs.
They have one phone to focus on, yet they can't get things right.
Currently the latest miui 12.5 update has bugs for two popular devices... Redmi note 10 Pro & Poco F3. Rest of the models don't have major complaints with the new miui 12.5 update.

Claus, 22 Aug 2021I have a Mi 11 ultra which sometimes has the issues with th... moreellipticlabs is the supplier of the proximity sensor. The proximity sensor is virtual/software based that uses ultrasound from the speakers on the phone (most likely the earpiece) to determine the proximity of the user to the phone. I don't know when Xiaomi started using their solution but I've never had a problem with voice calls on my Redmi Note 8T. Maybe there's a software fix in the pipeline?
