Nokia being as huge as it was meant that it was a slow death - but all the signs were there that Nokia's time at the top is over.

Nokia had the best hardware but Symbian was a real dinosaur compared to iOS. Nokia didn't have the software to compete and should've gone with Android, which was picking up steam rapidly with various smartphone manufacturers. Instead, they went with the unpopular Microsoft/Windows mobile OS which completely destroyed their mobile division. It's a shame because I really liked Nokia phones.

At the time the MeeGo project was in disarray, they could not bring even a single device to market and Nokia was unsuccessful in getting Samsung, Sony-Ericsson, LG, or any of the European operators on board."

Not a single device? They only had one device for it before it got scrapped and they went with Microsoft. The Nokia N9 was the only phone with it. Also they don't need other manufactures on it as they could've went the Apple route with having MeeGo on Nokia phones only.

"Nobody was interested in MeeGo, as there was no viable product."

It was literally a new OS, people weren't introduced to it yet. Had they marketed and kept going, it would've gained traction, especially since Nokia had a major reach at the time.

"Elop and the Nokia Board had no other choice but to kill it and move on."

Elop had a choice and he chose to work with his former employer. MeeGo wasn't even given a chance to grow and was killed before it could do anything.

I think one of the best phone at this time that was running Symbian and was better than the nokia n97 was the samsung i8910 omnia hd.

DarkTracker, 29 Aug 2021Can someone tell me if meego or s60 was linux based like a... moreSymbian was written in C++ a quite hard language to master, some might arrgue that this is one of the reasons why Symbian was slow to develope. MeeGo and later on MeeGo Hartmann is a linux base Operating System that derives from Maemo and moblin. The system was not tought only for phones, but also for low powered tables, laptops and so on. The system was developed in colaboration with intel and was actually something that gave ideas to others, or better said, it's ideas were stolen by others after eflop decided to sell Nokia.

[deleted post]I don't need to understand technology. But I understand people and they decided. Technology never won the vote, people did.

blue.sun, 29 Aug 2021And even after ten years the Sailfish is nowhere to be seen... moreAgain, talking not to keep quiet, and saying nothing that makes sense. Ever used sailfish? Companies see a lot of potential in it. Money are though more important so give the ignorant mass the trend they were tought to want and need until they get sick of it. With no new OS, smartphones are at this point nothing interesting anymore, the market is more then saturated. The ignorant mass is slowly prepared for something new. One can never know what that might be....

What a time this was, I remember owning the Nokia 5800XpressMusic coming from a Nokia N80 and N81, the 5800XM felt new and exciting and came with a plethora of accessories in the box much like N97, but when you used a 5800XM or N97 next to an iPhone 3G or 3GS at the time you could tell that Nokia had a VERY LONG way to go and one would have thought with their vast resources they would have been able to catch-up but it just never happened.

To this day I wish Nokia had continued developing Maemo/MeeGo, I feel like by now it would be competing well with iOS and Android, or if only Nokia had bought Palm’s WebOS at the time, but anyway what’s done is done and here we are now.

Back in 2009 I was a Symbian fanboy but I could see the end was near and I had been rooting for Maemo/MeeGo and WebOS, but ended up getting an Android in 2010 as I could see that even MeeGo and WebOS were not going anywhere, Google and Apple had truly sunk their teeth into all that matters (Consumers minds and developers). Using an iPhone now and wish there were more OS options.

Anonymous, 29 Aug 2021Lol windows phone was nothing like that😂😂Windows Phone was quite pleasant to use. The user interface way better than rivals at the time and also it was less demanding and would not lag or rarely while Android phones suffered from that issue then. Shame that the lack of apps was the reason it failed

kiasunkiasi, 29 Aug 2021this Nokia could have survive if they go for MeeGo inste... moreYes, the bad decisions by their then CEO led to death of the world's best phone company. They should have kept the Symbian OS alive for their mid-range phones since it was still very popular and killing it abruptly was just a ridiculous decision. Nokia then had many usable OS like MeeGo and Symbian, and then feature phones as the Asha and XM series and so on. Unfortunately, all of them were killed off by one person that was responsible for Nokia's downfall

Anonymous, 29 Aug 2021Lol windows phone was nothing like that😂😂Clearly you never use one.

Windows Phone and BB10 OS did show some potential at first but were let down by the lack of apps. Blackberry did let users side-load Android apps which I would do, in my Z10 but that too had it's limits. Windows Phone was very smooth and did not lag also it looked better than both, Android and iOS, but once again, same problem of lacks of apps, and they also refused to let android apps functionality in it or it might have been successful today

Nokia was ded cuz apple and android had more tricks in the bag to trick people in to using anriod and apple. And as Nokia was falling down people were adapting ot android and apple. And still surprised nokia disn tgive up and sold them to hmd. Although that wouldn't be considered original nokia.

YUKI93, 29 Aug 2021Iirc, MeeGo was built as a replacement for Symbian. I wonde... moreNo, we couldn't, and you know that very well. Meego was a geek aimed system, and at the time when it was finally discarded wasn't even fully developed and finished. But iOS and Android with their easy way of installing apps and user friendly interface were already killing all other systems.
Meego was never able to live after iPhone came to market, because people wanted something else.
And Nokia? A symbol of a long gone era, it would die anyway.

If Nokia embraced Android way before, there won't be any competition for mobile OS. Microsoft has shown with Windows Phone before that they can offer iOS performance and Android customization all in one single OS.
