What about a case?
It depends somewhat on "Build Quality" but mostly depends on the "Build Materials". So something that is prone to destruction will need a case, when compared to a durable device. And preference is given to the structural integrity, instead of mere cosmetic damages (ie/ a cracked glass back is much worse damage than a scratched plastic back).
When it comes to BUILD MATERIAL there are some aspects that need considering:
– Fragility (ie Drops/Cracks)
– Durability (ie Bending/Shape restraint)
– Scratch Resistance
– Heat Dissipation
– Signal Attenuation
– Mass Productability
– Price
and lastly Feel/Luxury (subjective)
The way in which you rate one Material being superior to another depends on how they score on these categories And on how much you weigh each different field. The types of materials that can be used range from Glossy Cheap Plastic, High-Grade Polycarbonate, Resins (Carbon Fibre/Kevlar), Leather, Wood, Cheap Aluminium, High-Grade Aluminium (7000-series), Ceramic, Sapphire, Tempered Glass.
I might come back to weigh these BUILD MATERIALS in terms of stats. However, it must be well-understood that we are not talking about BUILD QUALITY as many people confuse the two, they are actually mutually exclusive properties.

Nothing special, just the pre installed plastic protector and the silicon case that came with the phone.

No protector = feels great, display is mostly immune to scratches (Corning's GorillaGlass), display is extremely prone to cracking and shattering
Plastic protector = feels cheap, display is entirely immune to scratches (plastic gets scratched quickly, needs replacing), display is very prone to cracking and shattering
Glass protector = feels great, display is immune to scratches (glass could get scratched slowly, but replaceable), display is mostly immune to cracking and shattering as the force is absorbed by the glass protector which sacrifices itself to protect the integrity of the phone's expensive display.
Options for phones with different forms of display:
Flat: No protector. Plastic protector. A cheap flat Glass protector in medium thickness.
2.5D: No protector. Plastic protector. A cheap flat glass protector which doesn't fit very well (will come off soon, and need replacing often). An expensive glass protector kit that is thinner/less protective but is able to cover and stick at the edges better.
Curved/Extreme: No protector. Plastic protector. A hard plastic that feels a little like glass which can be cured onto the front display, with same impact protection as the thin-glass.
For me, style is important but not at a detriment to the User Experience. So I personally prefer a Flat Display with a Glass Protector. A compact 16:9 or 17:9 aspect ratio is most ideal with Slim Bezels to house the cameras, sensors, and front-firing stereo loudspeakers. I don't like the curved displays, or notches, or weird 19:9 aspect ratios. Especially since they come with weaker front sensors, and an objectively worse audio experience.

Won't even take a new phone out of its box until I have a cover and screen protector for it. Nothing fancy just a clear gel case and plastic (if already fitted) or glass screen protector simply for please of mind and to keep phone like new. I very rarely drop my phone but like to know it has that extra protection just in case.

I always order panzerglass and wallet flip cases so its ready for a new phone and first when i got them both, i start using my phone.
So for me colirs, design etc doesn't matter at all... But still i buy the color i like most, sometimes you still see a little color on the back and or on the right side of the phone.
And this protection really safe me lots of phones/displays/money.
And then i can care all my credit cards, driver licens etc

Silicone case, plastic protector - warm and transparent case good also to protect screen after falling, plastic protector since my phone almost never falls, but scratches often.
I could use also glass protector for screen, but I know there are phones with cases that are not compatible with some screen protectors, even if included for free(found in xiaomi for example).
Basically phones are cold and fragile naked, some even with slippery back(Sony) or sides(iphone). Talk about non-user-friendly design, wonder who pay those..

For how expensive flagships are getting, a solid screen protector and even thin case is a must. It's just an additional insurance policy while getting everything done on my 6-day work weeks.
I understand people not working blue collar jobs not doing so but I will not risk it while working at a restaurant.

I hope that the future phones are durable that doesn't need to put any screen protector or case at all to see the beauty of the phone's design.

No and no! I pay insurance so I don't have to hide my various beautiful handsets in hoodies that make all the phones look the same cheap shit and also make them bigger. Screen protectors are just lol

The moment I buy a smartphone I always install a tempered glass, and get a case that has lip to protect the camera and the screen but not those rugged thick ones.

I'm using this Galaxy A50 for around 2 years now, it gets the job done. I used screen protectors for like 1.5 years but now I don't because the glass feel without a screen protector is really good and I've got a hard shell and a silicone case for it with a front lip and I rarely drop my phone. Even after 7 to 8 months of use without a screen protector, there are barely any scratches aside from some faint ones here and there.

Since I started using smartphones back in 2008 I never used any screen protection or any case or cover. I simply try to be as much careful as possible. It's not that difficult.
And as for the screen - I have seen many times that the protecting glass withstands the crash, while the glass under it breaks, damaging the display. No, thank you.

i got given a 1plus 9 a couple months ago (i'm not a fan, it's too big, it has got a 3.5mm though an was free), totally ruined by deep scratches all over the screen, it's really really horrible. it's the 1st phone i've not put a matte (i hate the reflective ones) screen protector on, it came with a case so i kept that on it. no modern phone is made for going without them unless you only ever have it in a silk lined suit an put it on velvet surfaces, they're way too fragile an massive.
