Don't know how true is this report. I have seen iPhones holding a better resale value even after a period of 3-4 years.

I've sold several different electronic devices for over a decade. From my experience from buying and selling stuff, the devices that depreciates slower than smartphones are video game consoles/handhelds.

Switch Lite came out 2 years ago. They still go for $150 used. That's only $50 less than retail. Nintendo first-party games also depreciates the slowest compared to Sony games. It's Nintendo wanting to maintain their quality.

I got an iPhone 12 mini in April. By August, the trade-in value for it to get a Fold 3 or Flip 3 was worth only $300. That's a loss of $429 from retail. I think collecting other things like basketball cards or rare games have way more value than buying phones like Jay Williams and Nick Ackerman do.

We got people praising the HTC One M7 when they sell for $20 on OfferUp. I once saw it for $5 but didn't bother since it was too far. If you enjoy losing money, keep buying phones every year and keep selling or trading them in at a loss.

What is the point of all that iPhone updates and longevity then, if you just change after couple of years ? Many Android phone have two update but people upgrade after that towards newer models. So in that regard you are just like them. Not a bad thing but your statements about the iPhone longevity would only be meaningful if you actually keep your phone for that long as you proudly say Apple supports

oh lmao Samsung's depreciation rate is much closer to that of Huawei's than that of Apple's

no surprise there, it's just another android phone after all

What this chart is really showing is buying phones every year or two is a waste of money. It depreciates like automobiles. It's not like sneakers or real estate. My mom buys and sells expensive designer bags on the side. She never loses money from it. It's either break even or profitable.

Phone hobby is a losing proposition the moment you open the box. It's only worth it if say you bought an iPhone 2G and kept it in the sealed box. Buying and selling sealed PlayStation 5s is more profitable.

"Hardly anyone wants to buy a phone without Google Mobile Services outside of China."

What kind of BS is this? If hardly anyone wants to buy a phone without Google Mobile Services outside of China, it wouldn't have any value in the first place, not depreciating only after one year.

using an online recycling company like musicmagpie or CEX or other companies, you would have to be desperate, the rates are not really an accurate reflection, only what they are trying to buy and sell them on for, in reality most people would sell privately for much higher value, i can easliy recoup 75% of my phones cost in a year, if it is a samsung or apple, that would drop to probably around 40% if i used a trade in store like these, i know when i got my iphone 13 pro max, i was offered around £400 for my 12 pro max from one of these companies, and they go on to sell it for around £800, i sold privately for something like £750

I subbed to Jay Williams on YouTube years ago. I do wonder with such a small following, is it even worth it to buy all those phones with his own money? It's a worthless hobby. Imagine all those phones laying on the table and unused. Phones are just portals to the internet to waste more time.

Here is a list of samsung and apple devicea that are just way overpriced.

Z, 30 Oct 2021Something tells me "software support" is only a c... morePartly.

I need the newest android version at all times, or at least recent security patches.

It highly depends where you live, in my country a lot of stuff goes via apps (sadly, I hate it) and even my bank of the goverments push it.

                                      Insurance goes via apps
                                      Bank stuff goes via apps
                                      Government stuff goes via apps

I coould go on and on and on.

You know what they all have in common? If your phone gets hacked or gets malware because it wasn't up to date, all of them say show you a middlefinger and say you should have had a up to date phone instead.

I hate that so much, I still have a 11 year old notebook around with windows 7 for old games, but I could right now install Windows 10 on it and run that until 2025 without any problems.

That would give it 15 years of support, and that notebook was 599 euro too (got it back then because of IT school)

Meanwhile I can buy a Android phone and get 4 years at most, 5 if I count the Pixel phone Google refuses to sell in my country and many others.

That is the real big issue here.
