No point buying Mediatek, where there is no Dev support.

This creates headaches for people wanting to port roms or fix software bugs and puts an artifical expiry date on perfectly fine hardware (Not saying Qualcomm is good because they're not, just better in this regard).

If MediaTek opened up their software more they would clearly be the better alternative to Qualcomm. Ofc part of the blame is also on manufacturers for often not providing sources for their devices either, regardless of SoC manufacturer.

Maybe Anandtech is saying that a G710 core running at 2GHz is as powerful as two G78 cores running at 1GHz each, Idk.

I pretty much only play LoL and only occasionally. ANTUTU is worthless for me personally, but GB5 single core gives an idea of what kind of performance to expect in other areas outside of gaming. It's all relative.

I remember how impressed I was when MediaTek unveiled Dimensity 1000. It was supposedly smashing all benchmark tests by a lot. What happened is that SD announced their flagship few weeks later in a very calmly manner, no big statements and it was significantly better in every area. What is worse is that MediaTek never made it to a phone. They never shipped anything with D 1000. Instead they shipped a D 1000L which was twice as slow some 8-9 months later. I really don't have high hopes for this theoretical chip of theirs.

Anonymous, 19 Nov 2021What is source code? And why release it? What's the purpose?Source code is required so developers can make custom roms. It usually consists of a Linux kernel with proprietary drivers that works with a particular phone model. Once that's available, developers can tack AOSP onto the kernel and make it run on the phone's specific hardware. It really is up to the phone manufacturer to release kernel sources and not MediaTek themselves. MediaTek themselves don't know about the specific hardware each phone comes with.
