Nikkei: Apple to use self-developed iPhone modems from 2023

24 November 2021
Supposedly based on TSMC’s 4nm process.

You know how rubbish is android chipsets this year. This means 5G can be integrated into A16, not a separate chip by Qualcomm which tends to be power hungry and heat up badly, to make it more efficient
However, that means you need to delicate a part of A16's capability just for 5G, which reduces the actual peak performance that you could get (which is also too much).

This means that they will have inbuilt modem inside their chips by 2023....So basically, till Sept 2023, all iPhone users will get terrible battery life when on 5g because external modem consumes lot of power compared to internal modems.

Android phones already enjoying inbuilt modem since last year which doesn't drain that much battery when on 5g. No choice on this locked handicapped mess of an operating system called ios.

Happy now? What percentage do you think it is? How do you even quantify percentage on a modem?

Like I said, stop being so emotional.

Which in itself comes with patents - meaning they'll need to use them, design their own or license like they're doing with ARM.

Exyvia, 25 Nov 2021Yes and if I paid to copied your homework from school and t... moreYes, true
But why would anyone assume they would use the modem designed by intel?
Apple got licensing for ARM instruction set and developed own cores.
I think in this case also Apple would develop their own Modems.
If they can develop processing cores like that, I don't see why they would use inferior modems developed by someone else instead of developing their own.
I may be wrong, but its just what I feel.

Almand, 25 Nov 2021Apple doesn't use stuff off the shelf for their Phones... moreYes and if I paid to copied your homework from school and tweaked a few bits here and there, will you give me a pass that I did the homework myself? Probably not.

As said 51% of the development must be done before it's considered developed by anyone. Not just Apple.

Everything they use are custom developed very specifically for their needs. Same would go for the Modems, even if the base tech was acquired from Intel. So, to say "self Developed" would make sense.

You guys need to stop being so hyper-emotional about Apple.

Note7 owner, 25 Nov 2021So if the bought the tech and owns it, is it safe to say it... moreI know they own it, that's what I said when they acquired it from Intel.

The term 'Self Developed' is misleading - IMHO. E.g. If they bought blue prints - did they develop it? I would personally say No.

I would prefer 'Apple uses it's own iphone Modems' or something along that line (Unless they developed more that 51% of that blue print)
