DPreview has done tests using Adobe Premiere Pro crunching both h.264 and H.265, the M1 Max is really up there. And we're talking about laptop mobile chips here. Imagine what performance you get when it is put inside a desktop with a lot more power and thermal headroom.

Take a look against what exactly these "independent reviewers" compared it and in which software. You need to compare "apples to apples", which means similar new flagship mobile cpu/gpu's from amd, intel and nvidia. And exclude the pro res codec, because it's apple proprietary. No wonder.
Comparing M1 Max against a multiple decade old G5 cpu is really no "breakthrough" either. Even back then, the G5 was slow compared to amd/ibtel counterparts. It's just the same misleading thing apple does since ages, like when they compared the m1 to their intel based devices, which they deliberately slowed down by not installing the cpu cooler where it should be. You'd be impressed what is possible if you'd use a proper ryzen 5950x or threadripper, combined with desktop rtx 3090. And use proper video codecs.

With RAW or H265 it's a different story, especially if compared with non-apple video editing software.
Regarding benchmarks i fully agree. Worst thing is: Geekbench was developed by literally apple fanboys (Geek Patrol community). No wonder the benchmark absolutely is written in favor of apple cpu's. Still, everyone is using this flawed benchmark, which is just another marketing trick in favour for apple in the end. If we look at Cinebench or Passmark, they score quite lower in comparison and are ranked accordingly, where they belong.

Why the need to ban apple? Their M1 chips are really incredible. Computers are just tools you use for daily lives to get work done. I have been through 10 hrs of render on apple old G5 and also 6hrs of render on their Intel computers. If you have been there done that, you'll appreciate the breakthrough in the M1 Max.

Multiple manufacturers have been caught artificially increasing scores. I wouldn't be surprised if that would be the case with the M1 Max as well.
But it does seem to be the best for video editing software.

Just read at Tomshardware:
"In a press release, Qualcomm claimed that the GPU allows for gaming at full HD (1080p) up to 120 fps, "and is optimized to allow users to game up to 50% longer than certain competing platforms." The company didn't specify which platforms it was trash talking, but that test is based on using the game Big Rumble Boxing on Qualcomm reference platforms and commercially available machines. "
This new Gen3 is not even close to apple M1 Max gpu, that is on par with nVidia mobile RTX3080.

The M1 Max beats current AMD and Intel on cpu, and the gpu is on par with nVidia mobile RTX3080. That's the standard Qualcomm needs to aim. The Gen2 was already very weak against Intel older offerings... so....
