02 February 2022
Chip shortage is the primary reason why PlayStation 5 sold less than expected.

But people on these forums seem to view any criticism of their favourite smartphone brand as a personal attack on themselves and lash back with hostility & hatred. I just don't understand that.

I really hope they don't do the same like LG.. otherwise there will be even less choice. Like the Xperia 5 II a lot.

Sony's Mobile business is going to continue to be in decline until they release more affordable phones which they never do.

you have understand Sony's ideology, high sales is not their target, look at the past, they had released a head mounted display at US$1400 HMZ-T2 (without any tracking) 4 years before playstation vr, obviously it did not sell well, however the technology eventually trickle down to playstation vr selling at US$400 and sony sold 5 million units.

the same principal could apply to sony xperia pro-i, maybe pro-1 iii will take over sony xperia 1 (vi) as flagship at lower price point, seems sony not interesting emulating folding phones route.

or maybe sony use their moderately sucessful audiophile nw-zx or nw-wm range (since 2013, leading in niche market for high resolution audio, we might even see a xperia pro-a with this technology but it won't be cheap at first

Anonymous, 04 Feb 2022Stop being delusional. The operating income dropped about 20%.Seems you really cant comprehend what the report says.

Sony Electronics quarterly operating income (profit) dropped 20% in Q3 only, and per report not due to Mobiles income, whereas yearly operating income rose up 76% since last year, and is projected to rise up to 90% above last years operating income at the end of this fiscal year.

I definitely would not in any way call that a "declining mobiles buissness" as the articles title suggested.

They sold 2% less smartphones in last three months than in same months last year, and yet made more profit for Sony than other electronics like TVs and digital cameras.

Soon Sony will pull out of the Mobile phone market too. They've been doing terribly YoY for a long time now and they should really quit. All the Sony phones are either "nothing special while being expensive" or "too niche while also being too expensive".

At the very least, LG had cheap phones with very good specs. Getting 4 LG V60 phones with 4 dual screens for 900 USD two years ago was by far one of the best deals ever. LG made a smart move pulling out of the market while they were still in the green. LG had the right idea, the android market is too competitive.

It appears from the article that Sony, like LG beforehand, is losing money on its smartphones. Won't be surprised that eventually Sony will cease production of its smartphones.
