I don't remember Meta shutting down anything in Russia after the ultimatum to use local servers and open a physical office registered there. And Russia is immeasurably smaller market. In tech world there can be no vacuum. Zoom was completely irrelevant before the pandemics and it grew an order ot magnitude in the first 3 months. Meta will abide by the EU laws.

Yes, on one side of the argument you can say people use social media apps to communicate and to share pics and videos about their lives and activities. But on the other side, think about it, how much time does youngsters between the age of 5 and 14, spend on this social media apps. Those age are meant for the kids to learn and become creative, but with these social apps they don't get to develop as much because they would rather stay home and scroll through Facebook, instead of going to the park to play or go somewhere for a walk and to explore.

Of course FB will do everything it's being told by the EU. There's too much money involved for them to quit offering their platforms in the whole EU...
And yes, life without FB and Insta really is fantastic!

Also we still have thousands of other sites including all the other social media sites, so shutting down just Facebook and Insta won't make every single person in Europe friendless. They can just move to those sites.
...unfortunately, the UK will probably still have to deal with Facebook for a while longer since we're not in the EU anymore. Thanks, Brexit.

And frankly if Meta decides to shut them down will be their loss mostly.
Personally I quit fb in 2018 and never regretted it.

So there was no hate, no propaganda, no racism , no prejudice at all ?
Yes these platforms are usually weak at controlling it, but all the negative that is in society now didn't come from social media.
Wherever there are humans, there is a chance of hate just as much as a chance of compassion.
I barely use FB myself....only to really speak with a friend....I probably only use the web version (never app) probably once every few months if friends have vacation or family photos to share.

But facebook is where most people's phone gets all the birthdays from, shows important anniversaries and friend memories, plus it's where events are agreed upon, discovered and joined. Not even talking about powerful groups that have big convenience impact when you need to get rid off anything or on the contrary find something. No auction website can compete with the enormous user base and speed. Beside that, there are some countries which actually used it to overthrow their violent government. Just saying that life will be easier without facebook can apply to you, but it doesn't mean it applies to everyone.

Never had instagram...never will.
Put facebook account into hibernation 5 years ago, last month finally deleted the account and its now gone. Certainly will never be missed.
Now would like to delete my mobile phone and revert back to life as it was in the 70's...pure joy it was.

Ok to all you boomers saying "good shut them down" or "we can live without facebook" facebook aint shit people wildly use instagram to communicate and for young people its the only way we communicate. If meta shuts down its going to be a big blow for the younger generations. Not the mention that there are many people running businesses from meta related services. If meta shuts down in europe it will be a big problem for a lot of people and you need to understand that.

EU doesn't have the courage to ban or even really regulate FB/Instagram or Twitter. And No, Europe won't create a social media platform worthy of competing with any of the big guys, for atleast 20 years.

I own and operate a rather successful business and sure, I was a bit concerned when I chose to take my serenity back but believe it or not, my business has grown. Because I have added hours upon hours of time I can now utilize for my clients. I'm no longer getting sucked into this click bait, Or that and losing precious marketing and interpersonal time. It is possible. We had more small brick and mortar businesses before FB, now they're shuttering every day. Also when people ask you to join things and you inform them you don't have FB, you're afforded a unique opportunity to find out just how much they wanted YOUR presence or another head to count and brag about.
