Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ to be made by TSMC

07 March 2022
Samsung's manufacturing process is not up to Qualcomm's standards, it seems.

As a matter of fact, in the last two years, the bottleneck for performance was the very hot chip that affected everything in the phone, battery life, performance, etc. The most important change would be for the chip to run cooler, not to add up to those synthetic tests numbers, those mean nothing when after 5 minutes your phone shuts down because of overheating. In fact, in this moment is better to have a second tier chip, not overclocked, not with huge numbers for the cores.

OLED is supposed to be more efficient than LCD, but LCD phones nowadays have demonstrated, pound for pound, the best battery life you can get that doesn't rely on you using dark mode for everything.

A white background with black words has better contrast and legibility, so you don't need the screen to be as bright, further reducing battery use and heat production.

                GSMArena says:

"Allegedly, the suboptimal manufacturing process leads to higher power draw. We are yet to find out whether this is true or not and if there will be a significant discrepancy between the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Gen 1+ power consumption."

It's almost as if they don't pay attention to their own reviews. Of course Samsung foundries makes inefficient, leaky lithography. Just look at the battery life comparison between Xiamoi's 11 Lite 5G (Samsung) vs the 11 Lite 5G NE (TSMC). That's the most apples to apples comparison you can make.

ARM design has a flaws and mediatek able to fix that flaws .just waiting for D8100

I really don't understand how having new generation cores and new architecture have higher consumption and almost the same power, they are supposed to be around 20% more efficient, and that's not counting that D9000 is based on 4nm and 8100 on 5nm

OhNom, 07 Mar 2022Samsung's design sucks, but you should also consider t... moreThe X1 core does indeed consume more power, but the increase in consumption of energy shouldn't have been too much had Qualcomm have TSMC to manufacture the SD888/888+ and SD 8 Gen 1.

Look at Apple, their CPU cores are larger, and therefore much more powerful and energy hungry than the CPU cores of any Android flagship SoC, and yet it handles thermal throttling quite well thanks to TSMC's 5nm fabrication process. If it was Samsung who manufactured the A15, the results would be much worse for sure.

DMX, 07 Mar 2022I don't know why they have taken so long to get their ... moreWell there are only two options. Samsung and TSMC and TSMC has limited capacity. TSMC probably doesn't have the capacity to take all the the orders from Apple, Mediatek and Qualcomm so some chips will have to go to Samsung. It's a pity there is not more competition in high end chip manufacturing
