Flashback: the post-post-PC era

17 April 2022
Tablets tried to kill the PC. Then smartphones tried. Now the tables are turning and PCs are running smartphone software.

Just rework the Continuum mode to see Desktop UI when connected to an external monitor or a lapdock, and we're all good to go.

Well making somethong for 550 and then selling it for 1300 no wonder it failed.
Love good old times where everything was way cheaper.
Nowdays everybody is onterested ionly in money.
If this world will go way it goes soon we wioll have to pay 5000 for 500 eur devices.

            Damn you money.
Money are SIN and since we invented them we are shackeld with them like a cufs in jail making us slaves for those who have more than enough for more than million lifetimes.

Because a portable display monitor is as large and heavy as a light notebook or tablet with keyboard cover and because the chipsets for CPU and memory are cheaper and cheaper, smaller and smaller, the whole concept of centralizing the processing power in a smart phone is dead, distributed computing is faster anyway. So nothing will change in the next decades, the smart phones will not replace the tablets and thin laptops.

But I can't imagine doing any type of office work on a tablet or a phone. I would get old before I would finish any simple task.

This Post-PC era is like the "Year of Linux" joke lol.

It might happen, but instead of killing PC, they will just grab the new tech and evolve.

Apple tries too hard into selling the iPad as a PC substitute, and so far, it sells bc of the Apple pencil support, not bc it's a good PC substitute and I really doubt it will ever be.

I hardly use my laptop any more. Work doesn't require it. But I definitely still need one when transferring files to my external hard drive or converting them to mp4 or mp3. And at times, I get websites where I need a PC because the mobile version is lame.

I'm the opposite. I watch everything on my phone these days. It does get uncomfortable. I do get sleepy looking at that smaller display. But I prefer packing light with just two phones. Carrying my laptop is too cumbersome. Probably why I won't get a Steam Deck or Oppo Find N. The latter is just too heavy to carry as a phone.

What Jobs saw in the future, probably was how little use lots of people have for all-powerful hardware and demanding computing tasks. My parents can understand a tablet much better than a PC or a laptop because they use their phones every day - the transition is much easier because the interface is similar. Younger people or people my age that don't game, kind of do everything through their phone. Laptops and PCs are really just left to gather dust for years, occasionally used not because they're PCs, but because they need a larger screen, a mouse and a keyboard. Having recently bought my tablet (A Galaxy Tab S7 FE) I can see the point to the post-PC era: anything I really needed to do as a student, my tablet can do. It's got a large screen, I can connect a keyboard and a mouse to it, it can do split screen view and there's even DeX for a more PC-like environment. On the flip side of course there's laptops like the Galaxy Book2 Pro 360. It's really a 2-in-1 and with Samsung bringing their suite of apps to Windows, maybe it makes more sense to buy a fully-fledged laptop instead of a really expensive tablet for the same money.

To me, it seems like the post-PC era didn't come about, because the industry couldn't come together. And because the industry rushed towards a future it wasn't ready for. Nobody likes their stuff freezing, crashing or being unresponsive. Mid-range tablets haven't exactly been budget-friendly and the flagships push very well into laptop territory. Even today, USB 3 implementations and naming are confusing. USB-C still hasn't had the complete support of the industry and many tablets cheap out on their connector's capabilities (even the Tab S8 Ultra is only a 5Gbps connector I think?). Monitors have only started adding USB-C with power delivery recently. Using a tablet to take notes in lectures only recently has gotten good enough to become a serious consideration over paper. Bluetooth? That one I'm not sure since I haven't had a close relationship with Bluetooth gadgets over the past 10 years, but given how only recently truly wireless earbuds have taken off, I assume the technology wasn't there 10 years ago.

Overall, there's been way too much friction overall, from all sides of the argument. Your average user will pay premium prices if you can offer them a friction-less experience across all use cases and promise a good life-span of at least 5 years. But that's just not where we're at yet.

Personally, I still can absolutely see a future where at least tablets overtake the PC/laptop market. Slim, ultra portable devices you can carry with you. They can double as a second monitor, they can be used as makeshift PCs, they can be connected with a keyboard and a mouse. They can be great for your average student.

If they are not in need of off grid high processing performance, then its enough, on top you get also better mobility and energy saving.
High speed internet and web based systems will take care of most if not all, needing that power.
High performance tablets were always pricy, but it gets better over time, important is to start the trend, similar to how samsung's folds are now cheaper than ever, any other top brands, 3rd gen already.

If new surface run i7 12700 and rtx 3070 I may consider moving from notebook factor to tablet.

If MS released Windows10 Mobile (eg HP Elite X3) in 2011, they would have competed or even dominated against Google's Android. It's too bad they wasted all that time with Windows Phone 7/7.1/7.5 and Windows 8/8.1 and Windows Phone 8/8.2/RT builds.

They really got their act together when they had a combined Windows10 Pro/Mobile system.
