Flashback: the post-post-PC era

17 April 2022
Tablets tried to kill the PC. Then smartphones tried. Now the tables are turning and PCs are running smartphone software.

Using mostly chinese components, bill of materials would be 30-40% lower value easily.

I get the feeling the Smartphone, Tablet and PC are going to be with us for at least another decade or 2, but getting smarter and smarter as well as more powerful, and more connected between them.

This idea that all of this tech will “collapse” into one device is far fetched, people are different and want some experiences on different devices. While some prefer editing their social media videos on their iPhone or iPad Pro, others prefer their MacBook Pro. While some will happily watch movies and series on their iPad Pro or MacBook, some prefer a large high resolution smart TV. While some prefer to game on a PC others prefer it on a console.

The traditional PC is going to be with us for a very long time, but PC will also be around in different guises, you now wear a PC on your wrist, have a PC in your pocket and also have a PC on your desk and in your car.

Do you mean because of the operating system (eg. Android) or something else?

"An 8" Chrome OS tablet would be a device that I would take with me literally everywhere."

In what way is it superior to a laptop? Portability? It kind of contradicts what you said in the first sentence I quoted. For example, the Lenovo Duet is a 10" tablet with a detachable keyboard that runs ChromeOS. Why wouldn't that be your perfect device?

Check Smartisan TNT. A nice solution.

        And RIP Smartisan.

There no POST-PC era, nothing can replace a pc. PC means operated by a computer OS LIKE WINDOWS, Mac etc, no matter is a laptop, desktop or tab

I get the allure of having one device replacing multiple others. That‘s what the iPhone did.
But for phones to replace PCs and tablets, they lack the flexibility. What if I did stuff on my PC and wanted to text someone on my phone? The cable on the phone like what Motorola currently has would be annoying. It would have to be something like AirPlay to communicate with a display, without the user noticing that while using the phone.
Same for Tablets replacing laptops. Sometimes I want to scribble up something on my tablet while my PC keeps its state of the program. That‘s a heavy task for one SoC, and M1 may be just capable enough to do it, not to mention the necessary storage to store data of a tablet and a PC. That‘s not a mass market use case right now, and Apple does not seem to have interest in going that route, or else the new Studio Display would have done exactly that and at least included Bluetooth hardware. Wired is still a possibility with the hardware, and that’s what everybody else did until now, but they don’t seem interested in that either and I said the limitations with that.

It's a little pointless having a phone convert into a tablet.
A better way of doing that would be to have a large phone "phablet" which folds open into a "tab" small tablet. But it is definitely more useful having a powerful phone that can slot into a gamepad, laptop, or external dock. However, this assumes the software is malleable and smart enough to account for those changes (mostly UI).

The best hardware implementation of this I saw came from Razer. Whilst not perfect, the theory behind the symmetrical Razer Phone 2 is great, and the JungleCat controller is pocketable and usable, whilst their Project Linda laptop shell is also great.

If you combine that with perhaps a flexible phone, like the Huawei Mate X / Fold 1, it could make for a great Omni device. Especially when combined with Wireless Gigabit connection (5G) and Cloud Streaming/Computing.

Smartphones already replaced PCs. Everybody has a phone, but not everybody has a PC. Future generation won't even know what a PC is, hence, "what's a computer? " X86 has been around not because they were good, because it was monopolized by big tech for profit. Any junior computer science major would tell you that ARM is the future because of its efficiency. I have been using Dex for work and school since the years it was introduced and threw away anything else. We expect any new platform to behave like a windows on PC because that a common way of computing. But a common way doesn't necessarily mean the right way.

PakHuySun , 17 Apr 2022I hardly disagree with opinion that mobile devices such as ... moreIs not that simple. The problem is that we are trying to use phones and tablet like a like and that's because for years big tech composite monopolized the market for profit. Multitasking is the most inefficient way of computing. ARM memory management works much better than X86.

The newer Chromebooks running the Kompanio 828 and 1380 seem to perform really well. Faster SoCs and more RAM will definitely make a big difference. Qualcomm just isn't taking it serious.

Tablets will never replace laptops because the advantage of a keyboard makes a huge difference. Tablets with keyboards are just bad versions of laptops. I will take a small laptop over any tablet for productivity any day. I do have a special place in my heart for small tablets, but the small Android tablets are underpowered and the iPad is just intentionally over-restricted by Apple. An 8" Chrome OS tablet would be a device that I would take with me literally everywhere. Chrome OS offers a full desktop browsing experience even on low end hardware and you can use Android and Linux apps to fill in the gaps. iPadOS is a joke, even with an M1 you can only use the Safari engine. When they fix that maybe we'll have something to talk about.

Since I got myself a used Samsung Galaxy Note8 a few weeks ago, I've been exclusively using DeX from it and totally loving the experience. It really feels like using an Android tablet or a Chromebook laptop but with a truly powerful chipset in the pocket. Also, since the phone doesn't go beyond Android 9.0 Pie, I also have the bonus of running Linux on DeX in it.

That said, I still firmly believe that smartphones won't ever replace a true PC or laptop if we still rely on Android. We may not have a new age of Windows Phone right now, but I can definitely see a huge potential for resurrecting the Lumia lineup with modern hardware and Windows 11 ARM. It's the same story with smartphones running mobile Linux OS - I saw a video of someone successfully running GIMP desktop software inside a PINE64 PinePhone running Manjaro Phosh, and that has completely won my heart.

I hardly disagree with opinion that mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets can replace PC, they can't because of multitasking, only laptop can replace PC for most people because it's has same OS system and controls (mouse and keyboard) it's just easier to do multitasking with mouse and keyboard on a PC or Laptop compared to using touchscreens on mobile OS'ses like Android, iPad OS or iOS*

Since university I was used to laptops, two years ago I switched to mini-PC, because I stopped carrying my laptop with me.
I don't think this has anything to do with age, just with your needs and comfort. I don't watch videos on my phone, it's just so incomfortable. Writing even a simple document? No way, I need a proper keyboard to make it fast, and even swipe typing is not that fast and accurate. Photo editing and other things are too much limited on a phone.
Maybe in another ten years something will really change, but I am not that certain about it anymore...
