iPhone 8 and later are getting iOS 16, support for iPhone 6s, 7 and SE dropped

iPadOS 16 also drops some old devices - very old, e.g. the iPad Air 2 from 2014. watchOS 9 requires iOS 16, so that may cause some issues if you have an old phone.

Samsung now also provide Update 5 years Security, 4OS upgrade.

    I did a fresh restore on my iPhone SE (2016) before updating to 15.5. Updating software for 5+ years is so overrated that Apple fans are proud to cling onto. My SE's battery life has been complete trash since 14 & 15. But I have no choice because can't download a lot of apps if I stayed on iOS10 forever.

    Apple just wants more of our money by ruining our phones and buy the new one. And my SE was bought last year with 99% health. It's down to 92%. I'll be lucky if I reach 3 hours as it drains in chunks like 4% out of the blue. Prior to 14 & 15, I crossed 5 hour SOT easily. Overrated updating from an overrated ecosystem.

        Ok, so considering the latest iPhone from that dropped support list (iPhone 7) as the most recent reference to Apple's software update policy, they offered it 5 main OS updates. Samsung offers 4 main OS updates and 1 more year of security. So if Samsung manages to convert that last year to full OS updates, they are on par with Apple when it comes to software support. We are almost there. Others should take note as well.

          I did that two months ago on my macbook pro and the boot time is crazy fast compared to Monterey. Plus the animations (full screen) don't lag anymore.

          Wish you could also do that with iphones :(

It could be down to the lack of any NPU in the A10, but then the A9 doesn’t have one either and some older iPad models featuring it (and 2gb ram by the way) are getting updates.

                Having said that, even though iOS 16 and iPad 16 are similar builds, several machine learning features relaying on the NPU could be disabled on the iPads……….

                All in all, it’s happening anyway, the 7 is at an end of a good run overall, just a shame it couldn’t get that one more.

                      Happy with my 6s plus... no issue with ios 15.. looks like my phone will survive 3 more years... hope i will complete 10 years with this....

Currently I have to unloc it and swipe to see battery states of my watch (when charging) and AirPods as well as phone. If I can see that on lock screen one less thing to do further. Just tap display and it'll be there. And from the looks of it we'll be able to get rid of flashlight and camera shortcuts from lock screen. Stuff I never used from lock screen for some reason, but mistakenly triggered them bunch of times. So it's a small but very convenience focused update. I think it's neat.

                          Well, it probably for the best ... I have the OG SE with latest ios15.6(beta) and it feel pretty slow .. my guess iphone 8 and X will have another 2 years before Apple drop those as well.

                          Been thinking of switching back to ios but after reading about ios16, it feel like nothing other than visual enhancement.. tbh, how long people will stare at lock screen?

Not official reasons, but I'm suspecting, given how much phones do locally now.

I just think it a shame the 7 series couldn’t get this last one update, iOS 16 is not a major step up from 15, it should be able to handle it. Regardless the 7 has had a decent run.

                                  useless long update if the features of their newest phone can't be in their old gen (since iOS 14 if I'm not wrong). Also I saw that on the old gen, the battery only last about few hours.

                                  Long updates doesn't need on Android, you can even use WhatsApp FB or gaming on Android 5.0 from 2014

I think battery in my XR is exceptional considering it's only 3000 mAh and I only charge i to 80% it's entire life (3+ years). The only time people complained really was for SE models and models prior iPhone X where batteries were really significantly smaller.
