Xiaomi 12S Ultra will have 1-inch Sony IMX989 camera sensor

29 June 2022
The phone might not arrive on the global market though.

"Xiaomi advertised the new IMX989 to be 1” from one corner to another but this is misleading information - it is a 1-inch type, similar to the Xperia Pro-I camera sensor. An actual platform with a diagonal of 1 inch/2.54 cm would require a tremendously big lens, making the camera island bigger than any other competitor's.

Of course, Xiaomi might decide to go that way in the end. The Mi 11 Ultra is also heavy and anything but thin in the camera area. We’ll know for sure once the device is next week."

So you're not sure how they're doing it, but you're still saying it's misleading. Terrible journalism.

vrvly, 29 Jun 2022Wish Sony made the biggest sensor, the best lens, best in a... moreRegardless of how well Sony makes a camera system that behaves exactly like how an actual camera would, for as long as you keep on believing that artificially-enhanced photos and the thinking that brighter and more saturated = better image quality, then sad to say but you shouldn't have to expect anything anymore.

They have two ways to approach this if they want to cover 90%+ of the sensor area:
                  1. Go with ultra wide field of view like Sharp did (19mm eqv)
                  2. Go with very thick phone in order to protrude the lenses. 11U is laready the thickest phone out there

There might be some other way as well, like probably using crap lenses or trying to mitigate layers into single piece.

Nick Tegrataker, 29 Jun 2022I don't think Xiaomi will crop the sensor, if anything... moreThey announced on Weibo this morning that they wouldn't be cropping the sensor

The initial rumors were that the 12S would be a big phone. Glad to see that's just the ultra.

Michalis, 29 Jun 2022That is why they're explaining that it's a 1 inch... moreIt's funny how they didn't comment about 1" size when advertising the Sony Xperia Pro-I. In the initial publications they didn't even mention the phone was capturing images with its full sensor size, just advertised it as the first 1" sensor phone. How times change. :)

Gandalf, 29 Jun 2022Many phone companies used 1" sensor, but they don'... moreI don't think Xiaomi will crop the sensor, if anything they might just put the new sensor under a wider angle lens to prevent the bump from getting even thicker.

Gandalf, 29 Jun 2022Many phone companies used 1" sensor, but they don'... moreWell Xiaomi did use the entire sensor at the older 11 Ultra, so I don't see why this would be different.

Gandalf, 29 Jun 2022Many phone companies used 1" sensor, but they don'... moreVery few companies have done this. Only Sharp and Sony have used a 1 inch type on a modern smartphone, Sharp probably crops, I don't have enough information, the new R7 might use the entirety and Sony crops to about 60% of it. Xiaomi will most likely use the entirety, but that remains to be seen.

Well xiaomi is pretty impresive but they are only a second.
When comes to phone camera on flagship grade devices Huawei is the best friend and brand xiaomi is second.
Third place as usualy is fight between Samsung, Apple and Sony since LG is gone from phone industry.

Looks like Xiaomi like to shuffle with the camera sensors at their Ultra lineup as the 10 Ultra main camera was made by OmniVision, 11 Ultra was made by Samsung and now 12S Ultra will be made by Sony
