Samsung's upcoming "Hexa²pixel" sensor to hit 450MP resolution

26 July 2022
The 200MP HP1 and HP2 use Tetra²pixel color filters, an evolution of the original Tetracell designs.

Welp, that's depressing. The saddest part is that Samsung's semicon department is making a commitment to actually develop this crap even though they already know it would make no sense to do so. Just stick to Tetracell, Samsung.

12SU is already killing competition with 50mp stills even in low light and it's a long way to that beast.
Sony lost hard, not just by resolution, by optics and sensor size too. Too sad to look at their prices.
Truth is, after getting used to hi res, you won't want low res. It's such a difference, hi res Nex 3 vs any Sony, this kind of difference.

Are cpus powerful enough to handle this?!

Smartphones make up images that wasn't even taken

So having higher megapixels is easily more useful for computational photography than it is for traditional photography

Your only bases for complaining about tiny pixels

Is because you've been conditioned from TRADITIONAL ASSOCIATIONS with physical limitations

When you hear small pixels psychologically you draw on past experiences but remember how things are Today doesn't mean the rules will be the same tomorrow

Let me remind you computational photography can see through walls.....

Look at the world around you , AI getting near conscious, quantum mechanics /computation developing algorithms all over the place

Would you honestly look me in the eye and believe its ridiculous to bet on computational progress essentially a new frontier that limits we are far from even reaching

How long have we already tinkered with lens purity , aperture etc..

It's essentially playing out of brain 🧠 (smartphones) over brawn(regular cameras)

              Lastly innocent until proven guilty

IpsDisplay, 26 Jul 2022Guys just stop resisting We are in the digital age ..ma... moreProblems are:

                    1) these should be bayer. Not quad, hexa, deca, nona etc.. None of these phones use real time HDR, the purpose of the tech.

                    2) also, phones should not have more than 18MP. There are lenses that cost more than $10.000 from few years ago and cant deal with more than 50MP (reason lenses get updated after years), obviously cheap lenses on phones that probably cost less than $12 cant as well.

                    3) very bad rolling shutter. You can ask anyone that works with video industry how bad a 30ms readout is for video. Most of these sensors cannot even be read out in less than 20s. Apple new camera has DRAM to keep 10ms like 13 pro.

Many photographer call the 61MP of Alpha 7r4 as overkill for full frame and say 40-45MP is best range. That is 7x larger than 1" (4:3).

I know I know..."more is better". About the only really good that comes out of more sensors is when you zoom in, crop the photo, you won't lose as much detail.
What they SHOULD do, but won't, is to INCREASE the size of each pixel.
If more is better, why is it my expensive d-slr, is less than 50MP? Oh, I'm getting "shafted" by not having 200+ MP's. Well, considering the glass on the front of my camera, can and does cost as much as the camera, betcha my photos look better than what comes out of these silly phones. Yeah, but who wants to carry around bla bla bla.
Hey, if you are taking snapshots, selfies, more power to you. The camera isn't the first thing I look at, when purchasing a new phone.
But most people like style over substance.

blue, 26 Jul 2022Of course Nokia does binning. How would you otherwise imagi... moreSame way Z1/Z2/Z3/Z3c/Z3+ can do 20.7MP, 8MP and 3MP 4:3 mode, no FOV change (so no cropping) .
This is downsizing. Smaller files without any penalty against texture.
All phones have low resolution photo modes, like compact cameras of early 2000s.

Binning is hardware based. Reading pixels as one. You need an exact number to form a square (2x2, 3x3, 4x4, 5x5 etc). Pixels do not move to get together (yes, there are readers here that think they do).

Check the example of article. If you use microscope to see sensor you will see what the 12.5Mp shows. The other two are software emulation.

                        38/5 = 7.6

I'd rather resist this degeneracy. Why would I care about a shitty 450 MP with extremely tiny pixels than what Sony is doing with their two-layer transistor tech.

"Computational power is far more important to smartphone photography than the traditional physical limitations"

Physical limitations still limit computational power. You can only go so far with computational photography which is why both Apple and Google have upgraded their cameras (Google going to a 50MP sensor, while Apple increased sensor and pixel size).

"It is inevitable that higher megapixels cameras are the future and those that don't agree now will accept it sooner or later"

They're not the future, you have to be completely delusional to think so, especially if you believe the 200MP and this 450MP sensor are the future. Sure high resolution can be beneficial like Sony's sensor on the Mi 12 Pro, that is a good usage of high resolution. Not this dogwater sensor with tiny pixels that are smaller than the colour wavelengths.

"I'm telling you now "higher megapixels don't mean better pictures" won't age well"

They don't. You clearly don't know what you're talking about. High resolution is useful, but it depends on what you are doing. Landscape 100%. Sports and action photography? No way.

This sensor if it's actually that high in resolution is useless.

Samsung back at it with their idiotic marketing gimmicks. This 450 MP sensor will perform worse than an equally-sized conventional 12 MP Bayer sensor.

How would you otherwise imagine the camera would make the 5 MPix image? It had three modes - full resolution mode (poor quality), 8/5 MPix binned mode, 5 MPix "zoom" mode (cut from full resolution).
They just called it "oversampling", but the principle was exactly the same.
