31 July 2022
Small but powerful, with few compromises (though some might prove to be deal breakers). Is this the best small Android flagship?

Hey @the Flip, I would like to inform you of something:
Samsung phones aren't made in China. They're made either in Vietnam or Korea.
A few years ago, the battery was made in China, but not anymore.
Even the charger&cable are made in Vietnam/Korea.

I heard Korean samsung phones are made by robots.
    https://www.wired.co.uk/article/samsung-south-korea-robots-cheap-labour
It was a bit hard to find references of that. In the meanwhile, I learned that they are developing "human assistents" for daily life, including ones that will clean your house, schedule important meetings, prepare the lunch/dinner table and even pour you wine glasses.

Anonymous, 01 Aug 2022You forgot about a great little phone from that era, the Ga... moreAnd that obsession is justified&appropiate, to make it last as long as possible.
Not all phones have replaceable batteries. The day will come in which you (or someone else) has to open the phone up, scrape glue, open latches, clips or whatever and replace the battery.
Hopefully, none of the innumerable complex electronics get harmed.
And that the new battery is good, so to not need to do the replacement again.

It's such a shame that the iPhone SE (2016) is really the last iPhone I ever need. I'm discovering the Razr 5G with sim and iPhone SE used as an iPod touch is the best combination.

Flip 3 has a nice but thick holster case that I'm required to put on my right hip. Razr 5G has a belt clip for the left hip. If I want to use the restroom, I need to unclip the Razr and put it in my right pocket as my keys are in my left. Such a hassle. I did that combo with AirPods in my right pocket but it still became a hassle.

Solution: Razr 5G on the right hip and iPhone SE1 in my right pocket with the wired headphones since AirPods kills battery much faster. I can do a Flip 3 + Pixel 3 combo but the Pixel 3 lacks headphone jack and a bit too tall. It does feel great in the hand for its height with the rounded sides.

I need to rephrase myself. Under 130 mm height and under 70 mm in width isn't small to me. It was a normal-sized phone to me for the first two decades of smartphones. Such a shame we'll never return to that size. It felt like yesterday I was holding my iPhone 4 and Nexus One and saying to myself how great they feel in my hands.

Removable battery gone with flagships. MicroSD slot and headphone dying off. Only the iPhone 12/13 minis if you want a smaller phone with more recent flagship specs and I hate Face ID and began to hate gesture swipes as you can trigger closing Netflix if you want to use volume and brightness toggles.

I don't like current smartphones, too big, too imposing, not very practical
I just want a compact smartphone (140mm max) with a body that doesn't slip out of my hands
... and with an LED notification
(or bright notifications that work ... which is not always the case depending on the brand (Samsung for example ...))
A Zenfone 9 ? too powerful for me and out of budget unfortunately
A Sony ACE 3 ? ... but it doesn't exist in Europe (and I don't know if it has a notification LED)

YUKI93, 01 Aug 2022It's an easy Yes for me. It manage to have better over... moreJust wait for this upcoming two months to see whether there will be any leak or rumours about the Xperia 5 iv. If there isn't one, it's very unlikely that it will ever happen. When the Xperia 5 ii was launched in September 2020, leaks and rumours surfaced a month before the launch.

P.S I have no idea why there are people laughed at your comment. I absolutely see no reason to get the S22 at all.

For me, two major OS update is more than enough. After all, there's no point bragging along long software support when people change their phone every year or two, especially under carrier plans. Looks like I can definitely forget my plan on getting the S22 and wait for this phone to go on sale.

mizar, 01 Aug 2022Totally agree. For me it's the key for comfort in hand... moreThere isn't just one dimension to consider.
Height is important for pockets. That is why, very tall phones (examples Sony phones) are not pocket friendly. Even though they are narrow.
Also, thickness of the phone and how the frame of the phone is constructed is equally important. If the phone is too thin and has round corners (example Poco F3 or some models with curved screens like older Samsung phones or OnePlus phones), then the actual grip area is very narrow, so you can't get a good grip on the phone. If the frame is slippery and rounded you risk the phone to slip from your hand (example iPhone Xr or iPhone 11 phones).
Not to mention, the actual weight of the phone is also important for hand fatigue. iPhones usually have smaller sizes, but because they use more premium materials, they tend to have 190g+. Even though similar sized phones can have 160-175g. At 190g+ weight, you can feel fatigue on the hand quicker (sometimes even after 15-30 minutes).

So yeah, basically all my explanation and examples is to let people know, is not just one dimension to look for. Is a combination of more dimensions and design of the phone, that need to be taken into consideration. If you want to have a pleasant experience.

Pity they had to cheap out on the camera. This with Pixel 6a's photo quality will be a dream come true.

My main beef with Sony is that you need to get an Experia 1 to get an Always On Display. I don't think the 5 has it, 10 for sure does not, and it's not even easy (hasn't been for me anyway) to figure it out from the specs.

I would buy one, if it had better software support AND wireless charging. At this price point they should both be a given.

                                    It’s the same size

It's an easy Yes for me. It manage to have better overall battery performance than the Samsung Galaxy S22, which also has a 120Hz FHD+ resolution and similar overall dimension, while manage to keep the still-relevant headphone jack, so it definitely got my thumbs up. Of course the Sony Xperia 5 Mk3 is still a good buy in 2022, but I'm already drawn to the Xperia 1 Mk4's continuous variable zoom telephoto sensor. If the Xperia 5 Mk4 is not happening, than this ASUS will definitely be my top pick.
