08 August 2022
OnePlus had a big launch events last week. Organized in New York's beautiful Gotham Hall and attended by media folks around the world, the event was the company's first in-person gathering since the pandemic and a pretty impressive one at that.

Can't eat your cake and have it too. OnePlus costumers were already paying increasingly higher prices to keep their phones different. Oppo's/BBK's strategy is baffling, but not unfamiliar to anyone that lived through the downfall of the European manufacturers (e.g., Nokia, Siemens, Alcatel, ...).

blue, 09 Aug 2022And still somehow people buy phones without all you mention... moreThat is why smart people who buy their phone with their wallets don't buy Samsung and Apple. They know that they are not getting more for what they paid for. Also, not everyone is going to spend more money for wireless accessories on top of an already expensive phone in the first place.

And they are happy using them, so instead of going back to jack and microSD they buy a new device again without it...
Apple started that, Samsung joined them, and now even chinese brands join it too.

GregLu, 08 Aug 2022Embrace Samsung and their non-logical choice (No MicroSD sl... moreYou mean the move that works and brings them great sales and income? Well, more such non-logical choices for Samsung.

Honestly, the whole mobile market looks like a gimmick today. As I said earlier the mobile industry took a wrong path. Instead of really inovating, they are going downhill and removing usefull functions. What we have today?
            - sealed batteries
            - no SD slot (having one does not stop from using cloud but it's there when you need it)
            - no audio jack (as with the SD slot, having one does not stop you from using TWS)
            - 2 MP useless cameras
            - curved screens with notches, punch-holes
            - glass backs
            - no chargers
            - some phones are still released with microUSB
            - and some other usefull functions removed, useless added.
The only plus I see these days is the bigger batteries and maybe HRR, and more phones have stereo sound. If I am wrong or forgot something please correct me.

BBK's entire line up feels re-badged here or there.

              RealMe, Vivo, OnePlus, Oppo, Iqoo.

Same is the case with Xiaomi as well, Redmi, Poco, Mi.

What badge goes where, probably is decided with roll of a dice. I do understand they all try to work on the economies of scale, however both BBK and Xiaomi were very distinct when it came to their sub-brands. All had their niche in the market.

                I agree with you completely

I bailed the OnePlus boat last year... I still use my op7 pro as my main phone and the secondary is a mi11. I tried op9 pro but.. it was, not that great of an experience... Photos lacked clarity or quality, software was not ok .. so I went with mi11 that heats up when I play a longer video... Other than that, I had an ok experience with it.

Why can't they just make a phone ok that lasts you for 3 years at least?

Here's hoping that the next 2 or 3 iterations in, Nothing phone will become what OnePlus once was.

Anonymous, 08 Aug 2022Oppo should have remained in Asia. This way leaving Europe/... moreI don't agree. Still rocking my 5T with pride. It feels virtually indestructable. Such a great phone.

But I agree to the fact we need to find an alternative nowadays, but what would that be?

Chips are getting more powerful, but ridiculously expensive, and midrange chips are fine anyway. Cameras haven't improved massively; the ancient IMX 363 in the Pixel 3 to 6a still takes amongst the best photos. Under display FP sensors are less accurate and slower. Phones are too big and have glass backs so they break faster and people buy new phones. Apart from Google and Samsung, updates are getting slower (especially Xiaomi, OnePlus and Realme). I'll stop my negativity now...

Here's my hot take - all phones have been basically the same since 2016.It's not even fun to argue over which large brick with a screen is better anymore.Things like the missing alert slider you get used to within 2 weeks anyway.

Every Chinese brand is throwing super fast ultra hyper charging at their devices. Few watts difference doesn't really change much. The rest is the usual BBK.

If I'm not mistaken, OP 7 pro was also the first to introduce the higher refresh rate (which is now an industry staple) and the memc chip (which, thankfully, is not an industry staple).. Sad to see the ghost that OP has become of its former self.

I hope OnePlus will consider changing the notification panel of OxygenOS. Looks outdated with the current stock Android though.

Brand loyalty aside, Oneplus still has some niches which other mainstream brands cannot match such as Supervooc charging and highly competitive pricing for flagship chipsets for a relatively bloatware free experience coming from a chinese brand.

It is still an attractive offering but IDK for how long more.

These OnePlus guys will never learn. They just keep messing with software for newer models. Why they do that??

This isn't even a hot take, it's simply facts. The OnePlus of today is so sad
